The Senior Manager of Communications oversees advocacy-related content development and assists with media relations strategy development and activities to help raise the Councils visibility. This position ensures NSC advocacy content is conveyed clearly and developed for the NSC audiences, and it executes external communications strategies at national, state and community levels to advance the Councils mission and maintain its reputation as an undisputed leader in safety.
Content creation and staff supervision - 50%
Manages a team of content producers focused on amplifying the Councils message to each of our audiences, and a media relations coordinator. Provides leadership and coaching to individual staff members and develops departmental processes.
Serves as the head writer in the communications department, assigning content to appropriate staff members and taking on writing projects when needed.
Manages development and oversight of communications pieces including researching, writing, editing and producing advocacy reports, scripts, promotional materials and articles for internal and external publications.
Identifies areas within the Council that could benefit from additional content or messaging updates.
Develops editorial calendars for blogs, news releases, op-eds and other relevant written pieces and helps the content producers execute.
Manages the op-ed development and placement process.
Supports legislative strategies with relevant communications.
Oversees the development of market research surveys and opinion polls and drives the narrative. Creates a media and content strategy to release the findings.
Works alongside the Director of Communications to Develop content production strategies to reach the public during key safety observances and campaigns including but not limited to Distracted Driving Awareness Month, National Safety Month, National Poison Prevention Week and NSC Congress & Expo.
Research, Planning, Strategy, and Execution - 40%
Works with Director of Communications to develop and execute communications plans to raise awareness about safety on the road, in the workplace and in homes and communities. Plans include tactics for reaching key constituents, including but not limited to traditional media, NSC staff, chapters, funders, potential partners, lawmakers and the public at large.
Maintains current knowledge of research findings, data, effective prevention strategies and behavior and cultural changes pertaining to leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths.
Works closely with subject matter experts to remain up-to-date on issues and trends.
Collaborates with Director of Communications to conduct media training. Designates appropriate staff members to respond to media. Serves as an additional NSC spokesperson.
Manages the press release development and distribution process.
Develops talking points for use during media interviews.
Oversees Media Relations Coordinators monitoring of both print and broadcast media. Identifies trends and capitalizes on local, regional and national interests to expand awareness of NSC messaging.
Determines areas where NSC can have a unique voice and create its own news. Leverages existing materials and resources to drive the strategy.
Recommends when NSC should engage in communicating on particular safety issues and what the level of that engagement should be.
Participates in crisis communications plans when needed.
Checks in regularly with close media contacts. Offer exclusives and information about upcoming observances, emerging trends and other issues on the horizon. Assists reporters in finding materials to enhance their coverage.
Oversees NSC Media Studio operations, including NSC staff time and the needs of producers, reporters and broadcast tech teams to ensure smooth transmission.
Coordinates media tours and meetings for NSC spokespersons with producers, editors and reporters to discuss NSC issues and how the Council can enhance coverage.
Secures editorial board meetings and asks outlets to take a stand on key safety issues.
Oversees the monitoring of the media email inbox and hotline.

Supports other functions within the communications department as needed, including executive communications, internal communications, web content development and project management.
Bachelors degree in journalism, communications or public relations required.
Minimum of 7 years writing, editing, managing multiple projects and working with members of the media.
Advanced understanding of how the media works, how and when to pitch, how to execute crisis communications and how to formulate effective communications strategies to reach the general public. Proven track record of pitching stories that resulted in placements in national, state and local outlets.
Ability to write for many different audiences.
Experience working with subject matter experts and spokespeople.
Strong project management skills.
Understanding of different writing styles based on audience and when they are appropriate.
Analytical and strategic thinking that supports efforts to turn research-based prevention strategies and behavioral patterns and theories into communications appropriate for general public audience.
Proficiency in MS Office.
Experience working in nonprofit, advocacy and public health desired.
