Director of Foundation Relations
Make a Lasting Impact
Director, Foundation Relations
New York, New York
At ITHAKA, we are passionate about making a difference in the world. We impact the lives of millions of people and thousands of institutions every day both in ground-breaking ways and in small ways that mean a lot.
As a not-for-profit organization, we care deeply about our mission. We work with leaders in the global higher education community to advance and preserve knowledge, to improve teaching and learning through the use of digital technologies, and to help broaden access to higher education by reducing the cost while also improving student outcomes. We are passionate about the value of education and are driven to help our universities, colleges, and high schools become better, more affordable, and more effective, and to reach beyond these traditional walls to support learners everywhere.
In two decades, we have launched some of the most transformative and widely used services in higher education: JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S R and Artstor. Our 300 employees in the United States, Europe, and Asia work closely with our user communities, day in and day out, to build and continuously improve upon these services, and to identify new opportunities to expand access to knowledge and learning. As a successful, growing organization in a demanding and dynamic environment, we challenge ourselves to retain an entrepreneurial spirit that pursues and embraces change.
ITHAKA is headquartered in New York, New York with additional offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Princeton, New Jersey and provides legal oversight and services for Artstor, also located in New York, New York.
Mission and Funding
Our work across these services is highly valued in the global higher education community, and we cover our costs by collecting fees in exchange for the access, preservation, and research and consulting services we provide. That exerts discipline on our operations and we must continually adapt to the needs of our audiences to be worthy of their support. Thousands of higher education and related institutions around the world are ITHAKA’s primary financial supporters. Because the organizations share our commitment to our mission, we have the financial resources necessary to maintain a positive work environment that encourages innovation and the continuous pursuit of excellence.
As a not-for-profit organization, ITHAKA has an opportunity to generate financial support from foundations for projects and initiatives that support our mission. Our Director of Foundation Relations will have primary responsibility for developing and managing our relationships with those foundations. In addition to setting ITHAKA’s foundation strategy, the Director will work in close partnership with leaders of our various services to conceive of and execute on proposals for projects that make access to knowledge and education more widely available and affordable. There will be a particular emphasis on working with Ithaka S R
, which generates a substantial portion of its annual revenue through grants. Once the projects are funded, the Director will also manage the ongoing relationship with the foundations to ensure that ITHAKA meets all targets and reporting objectives. Our mission is in an area where a number of large foundations have vibrant programs and with more focused strategic effort we believe we can increase support and therefore our impact. The Director of Foundation Relations will lead our efforts to realize that potential.
ITHAKA will provide you with an opportunity in this role that few other organizations can offer including:
An established track record for quality and effectiveness, both in general and on projects supported by foundations.
Well established and strong relationships with a number of the nation’s largest foundations.
A dynamic organization with a diverse set of activities, ranging from developing new and innovative ways to deliver text and image based digital content ( JSTOR

A commitment to a collaborative and collegial atmosphere where innovation and empowerment are valued.
Smart and dedicated mission-driven colleagues and a board of trustees who will be eager to work with you to build and extend strong foundation relationships.
