NOVEC is currently recruiting for a qualified, self-motivated person who will serve as the community and government relations representative to enhance and promote a positive public image for the company. This position will be responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and promoting various public relations activities. The ideal candidate will provide information and assistance to customer-owners, the business community, employees, company management and local and county legislators regarding NOVEC’s programs and services. They will also foster on-going, mutually beneficial relationships with various charitable, civic, and community organizations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establishes and maintains positive relationships with community organizations.
Plans external and internal community relations programs by identifying audience informational needs and the most effective communications approaches and methodologies-to meet those needs. Prepares and presents community relations updates at employee meetings. Participates in communicating updates regarding disaster receiver events (i.e. major storm restoration) to facilitate effective internal and external communications.
Monitors issues of interest or concern to the company on the local and county government levels. Provides information to appropriate members of the NOVEC team regarding issues for discussion with government officials. Schedules, plans and coordinates informational meetings, as assigned, with local and county government officials to introduce them to the company and discuss issues of interest or concern.
Attends important functions on the company’s behalf, serving as the community relations representative and enhancing presence in the community.
Collaborates with Public Relation’s (PR) division to ensure NOVEC’s community relations activities are communicated. Develops public relations/communications project plans and related materials and monitors plans for completion of tasks.
Schedules, creates, coordinates and handles direct execution of meetings and events. Coordinates with other NOVEC departments, as needed.
Collaborates with volunteers and staff to develop, execute and manage activities.
Ensures deadlines, program, and budgetary goals are met.
Contributes to development or updates of project plans and timelines for internal staff. Schedules team meetings and maintain regular communications and updates with staff, as needed.
Provides logistical support for programs, conferences and special events.
Researches, evaluates, develops, implements, and promotes community affairs and programs offered by the company to customer-owners, employees, and the community at-large. Such programs may include, but are not limited to,
Youth Tour, Operation Round Up
Action Committee for Rural Electrification (ACRE), Scholarship Program
and school partnerships.
Serves as lead for the planning and conducting of NOVEC’s annual membership meeting. Assists with the establishment of an operating budget and works within that budget to plan, monitor, and oversee the various aspects of the meeting. Plans, organizes and delegates work assignments to ensure that all legal requirements for the meeting are met, customer-owner’s needs and the board of directors’ expectations are met, and the meeting is professionally and correctly conducted from beginning to end.
Serves as Executive Director of an employee community action team, NOVEC HELPS, which is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization. Implements, develops and promotes awareness of NOVEC HELPS’ involvement in the community through effective use of communications strategies. Encourages employee participation in community programs through NOVEC HELPS. Works with the employee board to conduct fundraising activities that align well with the company and NOVEC HELPS.
Assists with overseeing and implementing corporate sponsorship programs in support of various community and civic organizations. Coordinates participation in fundraising events that support such charitable organizations, as appropriate.
Serves as a representative of the company for community, civic, and business organizations such as Chambers of Commerce, serving on boards and/or other volunteer committees, as appropriate and approved.
Assists with maintaining accurate information on the NOVEC website, Intranet, and social media sites. Regularly confers with other members of the PR Team to facilitate effective communications and teamwork. Reviews, edits, and proof-reads materials for publication as part of the PR Division’s team review process. Researches and writes articles, as assigned, for internal and external communications.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or a strongly related major, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience is required. Three or more years’ experience in community relations is required. Prior experience with a not-for-profit organization is preferred. An established track record of effectively working with a local business community is preferred, as is prior experience in the utility/energy industry. Crisis communications and disaster preparedness experience is also preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated above-average interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy.
Knowledge and application of public relations principles and best practices.
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, ability to meet strict and frequent deadlines, self-motivated, problem-solver, inclusive, team player.
Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Exceptional judgment, discretion, responsiveness, and initiative.
Must be very responsive to tasking and able to work well independently and in groups.
Outstanding organizational and time management skills; ability to handle several projects at different stages simultaneously while maintaining strong attention to detail.
Project management skills, budget development and administration experience preferred.
Demonstrated ability to delegate and effectively monitor work of non-direct reports.
Demonstrated ability to adjust strategic and operational priorities to meet customer and business needs.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and be able to operate company pool vehicles, as necessary.
Must be able and available to work weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, and other times outside of standard work hours to assist in service restoration, emergencies that may arise, necessary business operations and to attend community and/or government events.
Must maintain a telephone/personal communication device at all times. Ability to contact telephone or personal communication device must be made available to the company for the purpose of contacting the employee to conduct routine and/or emergency business.
