Summary Job Description:

This position will be directly responsible for the creation and coordination of internal and external communications, presentations, public relations materials, events, tactics, timelines, budgets, measures to support the business objectives and priorities of Duke Network Services. The Associate Director will develop, plan and implement communications and public relations activities to meet the internal and external business objectives of the department.

The Associate Director will be responsible for leading and operationalizing primary public relationship events or Duke participation in such with assigned business and clinical leaders within Network Services, Duke Affiliations and Duke LifePoint Healthcare and for regularly supporting the communication activities around special and ground breaking events.

The Associate Director will serve as the Duke Network Services lead for the integration of public relations and communication efforts within Network Services specialty clinical affiliations and Duke LifePoint Healthcare to support the contractual business needs. Additionally, the role is responsible for internal departmental communication needs, i.e. monthly newsletters, developing executive leadership communication presentations and memos, etc.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Demonstrate understanding of the scope, purpose and services provided through Network Services affiliates, Business Development, Telehealth such that the Associate Director can accurately reflect communication regarding Duke external relationships including but not limited to specialty affiliations and Duke LifePoint Healthcare
Responsible for ongoing DNS intranet (Sharepoint or its replacement) content development, management, maintenance and uploading. Collaborate with the NS AD of Marketing on marketing display development for the intranet site.
Serve as the NS lead for content development for the Duke Network Services external website to ensure content is current and generates traffic to the website and throughout Duke Health on behalf of Network Services.
In collaboration with the Network Services AD for Marketing, serve as the Duke resource co-lead for the Duke LifePoint website. Collaborate with LifePoint HSC on all aspects of updating, maintenance, and messaging.
Lead and oversee review process, including editing and obtaining appropriate approvals within Duke and LifePoint and other Network Services affiliations in the realm of public relations and communications (media relations, organizational communications, publications, online, etc.) to maximize effectiveness of tactical projects
Lead and oversee internal communications, including recommend, draft, facilitate and finalize internal communications across Duke Network Services in close collaboration with Executive Leadership and other Network Services leaders related to business strategy, partnerships, and employee events including, but not limited to employee forums, internal newsletters, weekly dept briefings, department announcements, etc
Collaborate with the team leads within Network Services as requested for the development, review and finalization of communications to their customers including, but not limited to newsletters, etc
Support Leadership in the development of key messages and presentations as a part of business development and affiliate activities
Serve as the Duke lead for the coordination of media, PR activities for Duke LifePoint acquisitions and collaborate with LifePoint Communications Leadership
Demonstrate understanding of the Network Services business such that the Associate Director will effectively represent the department with written and verbal communications internally and externally to Network Services
Liaison with Duke Marketing and Communications including establishing monthly meetings.
Identify, prepare and distribute current and relevant news pieces internal to Network Services such as a departmental newsletter and creating internal and external communications about services, accomplishments and new business initiatives
Collaborate with Network Services Affiliates and Duke LifePoint Healthcare to develop key messages and value propositions related to various components of business strategies
Ensure tactical execution of PR and a variety of communication pieces remain tied to plan objectives and strategies
Draft and finalize key messages, value propositions, plan summaries, results summaries, and other marketing communications materials related to Network Services affiliations and Duke LifePoint joint venture affiliations
Serve as the Duke lead for the coordination and implementation of public relations and communication activities including but not limited to Duke LifePoint acquisitions and new specialty affiliations; work collaboratively to maximize support for such initiatives with Network Services, LifePoint and affiliate leadership.
Lead the coordination and implementation of the annual Duke Health Leadership Conference for leadership teams of Duke affiliates
Direct, assess, and guide through feedback the assigned work of designated support staff for Communications & PR, including performance to assigned duties and adherence and compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
Serve as back up coverage needs within Network Services for the AD of Marketing when offsite or out of the office
At times may be required to participate in or lead Network Services committees
Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must be able to achieve positive results in a large, complex organization
Highly developed verbal, written, and analytical skills are necessary
Group facilitation and presentation skills are required
Must be able to manage multiple projects and processes simultaneously
Self-motivation and the ability to perform with minimal direct supervision
Strong working knowledge of branding fundamentals and design principles
Experience developing/overseeing creative work within established brand guidelines
Experience critiquing, proof reading, editing of creative work (including news releases, newsletters, promotions, brochures, websites), with proven ability to review for brand protection and overall quality
Strong attention to detail
Working knowledge of writing style guides, with proven ability to review and edit written content for style adherence
Strong understanding/experience in news writing and medical/business news media
Ability to work in a fast moving environment and multi-tasking with multiple organizations as well as with Duke Marketing and Communications, Duke News Office, DNS Marketing,
Experience in reviewing/editing material to prevent over promising, over promoting, or inclusion of language inconsistent with the image and values of Duke Health
Ability to work in a fast moving environment and multi-tasking with multiple organizations as well as with Duke Marketing and Communications, Duke News Office, Duke Licensing Office and LifePoint Health Marketing and Communications teams.
Ability to travel (regionally and nationally) in support of new business and established affiliated sites (travel will be required).

Work requires a general business background generally equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a business related field.


Work requires four years related business or administrative experience in hospital or group practice operations, management, planning, managed care contracting or project management. A master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Health Administration, or Public Policy may be substituted for two years experience.

Experience Preferred

Work experience should include participation in strategic plan development and expertise in tactics that range from collateral material creation and development, to special event management, to highly targeted, audience-specific initiatives.

Performance Measurement

This position will be reviewed annually based on performance against a set of goals and objectives developed in alignment with DUHS and functional strategies. The set of annual goals and objectives is to be developed and agreed upon.
