The Marketing and Communications Chair’s role is to create awareness, promote the Council, and oversee the content development. The Marketing and Communications Chair develops strategies on how to communicate the Council’s message to potential members and sponsors, and to generate interest in the mission of the Council. The Chair may use a range of methods to get the word out, some of which include press releases, social media, email and direct mail campaigns. The position reports to the Board of Directors and manages projects and priorities of the WWCMA marketing manager and graphic designer.

Specific Responsibilities

The Committee Chair is responsible for overseeing the following Marketing and Communications functions: Creation and implementation of integrated marketing & communications strategies and tactics.

Maintenance and development of content (multi-media and editorial) for websites, social media, email marketing, and promotional materials including: News, blogs, press releases, educational materials,etc.

Edit and upload event photos/videos, and tweet during events

Regularly maintain and update social networks with news and resources.

Cross-promote with members, sponsors, and partners.

Communications and outreach efforts targeting members, program participants, sponsors, volunteers, media and other interest groups.

PR and media outreach to raise awareness for the council.

Email marketing, including maintaining mailing lists, member and media contacts.

Development of presentations, surveys and organizational reports , including analytics reports as required for email marketing, web and social media

Ensure consistent branding & design of collateral & promotional materials.

Manage WWCMA member collaboration group and online job board.

Manage projects and priorities of the WWCMA marketing manager and graphic designer.

Work with other Committee chairs to develop a marketing plan for their specific program, event or project, including communications plan, target audience identification, press release, etc.

Work with Board of Directors to identify needs to market the Council and create awareness for the Council to specific audiences and for specific purposes, such as events, awards, sponsorship solicitation, etc.

Approximate Hours per Month:

20-30 hours per month

(excluding travel time)

10-12 hours/month on project management and execution

6-10 hours/month for project management meetings, planning, documentation, research. Can be more during peak times such as prior to special events.

4 hours/month to attend Board of Director meetings


Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

Extensive professional experience with leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector

Demonstrated success as a nonprofit board member or volunteer

A commitment to and understanding of WWCMA’s beneficiaries and mission preferably based on experience

Extensive experience and knowledge of worksite health promotion program designs and industry best practices

Ability to manage and collaborate across multiple WWCMA committees within the scope of the organization

Ability to think strategically and evaluate potential marketing opportunities for the Council

Strong project management skills, including building and managing a project plan; manage tasks and deliverables; ensure others are fulfilling their roles and tasks assigned to them; ability to facilitate and run meetings efficiently

Excellent leadership skills, including the ability to motivate and engage others; negotiate compromise and resolve differences; maintain positive working relationships; capability to set direction; clearly and comfortable delegate and broadly share both responsibility and accountability; ability to make sound decisions based on knowledge, analysis, and judgment

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required

Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, e-Content Management Systems, and Social Media Networks (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube LinkedIn) preferred.

Experience with website and email marketing content management systems.

Experience with event promotion.

Experience working with membership organizations or associations preferred.

Self-directed and ability to work independently.

Strong written and oral communication skills

Conduct him/herself in ethical and honest manner

Ability to listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, work well with people individually and in a group.

Board terms

WWCMA’s Marketing and Communications Chair will serve an interim term through December 31, 2018 and be eligible for re-appointment for two additional two-year terms. Board meetings will be held semi-monthly, alternating between in-person meetings and conference calls.

Committee meetings will be held will be held monthly with additional touch points on an as needed basis, as determined by the members of the committee.

Service on WWCMA’s board of directors is without remuneration.
