Position Summary: Virginia Techu2019s Department of Entomology seeks a qualified individual in the area of pesticide safety Extension education. This is a twelve-month, restricted staff position based on campus at Virginia Tech, a land-grant university in the scenic New River Valley of Virginia. The position is a Public Relations & Marketing Specialist Ill (working title is Publications & Marketing Coordinator). The Public Relations and Marketing Specialist Ill role provides career tracks for public relations specialists and marketing specialists performing journey-level to advanced level responsibilities. Duties include conducting research and marketing studies, project and event planning, developing publicationu2019s and promotional strategies, establishing and maintaining media relations and implementing programs. Employees are responsible for a segment of the pesticide safety education program activities that relate to public and media relations, marketing and fundraising. A major role for this employee is to manage (organize, write, edit, and publish) VCE publications associated with pesticide safety education. The program is funded by the VDACS/Office of Pesticide Services, and this person will work with that agency to comply with state and federal laws and policy associated with pesticide applicator education. Another important role is to work with the media and university relations to maintain a branded pesticide safety and science literacy education program. Events critical to the program include train-theu00adtrainer workshops and public specialized audience events pertaining to science, pest management, and pesticide safety education. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in applicable discipline, or a combination of education and experience related to the job tasks. Preferred Qualifications: Pest management and/or Extension experience; Experience writing pesticide applicator training manuals and exams; Excellent organizational, administrative, and communication skills; Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds; Detail-oriented; Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; Ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends; Practical work experience in agriculture, pesticide application, or a related field.
