THIS IS A TEMPORARY, 1-YEAR POSITION ENDING ON MARCH 31ST, 2019 WITH THE POSSIBILITY TO RENEW FOR ANOTHER YEAR.
The primary purpose of a good film/video editor is to composes a message, enveloped within a story arc, in a visually and audibly coherent sequence – resulting in an influential and emotional viewer experience. The editor develops and fleshes out characters, build scenes in the story telling process, often re-writes and re-orders scenes that can restructure plots while maintaining the director’s vision. This is an artistic storytelling that combines compelling music, atmospheric sound design, meaningful imagery, and dialog, to produce content in the form of TV content (shows), image features, campaigns, trailers, social media, and more.
The Content Editor will be responsible to lead the editing, with a team of assistants, coordinate with other post production departments and professionals in the creation of assigned content for BYU Broadcasting. This person must be artistic, highly creative, very technical, extremely organized and have a solid understanding of a full post production workflow in a medium sized network facility.
This position will be assigned to a particular show and will be 100% dedicated to the editing of that show.
•Effective storytelling in a highly creative, artistic, and innovative way through video editing.
oMake editorial decisions in the creation of an effective story arc.
oWork closely with directors and producers, both within BYUB and outside, to achieve the desired results. This includes defining any technical recommendations in pre-production and then execution in the editing process.
oInstruct and assigning student post (PA) production assistants to, log, assistant edit and on-line.
oSupervise the finishing of on-air material by the team.
oEnsure all delivery of finished media is on time and meeting all deadlines.
•Pre-production: Consult and strategize with Producers and Directors to creatively design a vision for assigned campaigns. Then oversee the implementation of the plan for all assigned program elements.
oAttend and participate in planning meetings
oAct as liaison between director and/or producer groups with other Post-Production departments i.e.; color correction, sound design, graphics and motion graphics.
•Leading, mentoring, training and coordinating a team of post PA’s (production assistants) to log media assets, rough-edit, color correct and finish for air all materials.
oEnsure all finished material meets all BYU Broadcasting standards as well as FCC technical standards.
•Technical asset and file management
oOversee preparing of all finished projects and media assets for archiving.
oSupervise all ingest of new media assets for assigned projects.
oCoordinating with outside vendors to secure assets for production.
oManaging media assets in a coherent work environment.
Minimum education/experience required:
Must have 4 years of full-time professional video editing in the Film/television/Post-Production industry. Must include advanced knowledge of the post production process and workflow including off-line/on-line editorial, color correction, sound design, motion graphics and such. Must include lead editor of content for TV and social media distribution.
Must include a “Demo-Reel” or work sample by URL.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, broadcasting, film or related field, and 5 years of professional video editing/motion graphics: which will include audio editing, color correction, integrated motion graphic, project supervision, resource management, and employee supervision. Experience with a wide variety of programming lengths and genres. In addition, any experience with editing that required comedic and dramatic timing is preferred.
Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications
•Must be highly creative and artistic in storytelling and delivering finished products at the highest level.
•The candidate should have extensive experience in all aspects of Post-Production including; editorial, color correction, post sound, effects, and motion-graphics.
•Should be able to demonstrate an experience in editing a wide variety of styles/genres.
•The candidate should have extensive experience managing resources, projects, deadlines, and timelines.
•Ability to produce projects under the pressure of tight deadlines.
•Ability to monitor, train and coordinate assignments with a team of student employees, contract employees, and others as needed.
•Ability to ensure technical, artistic and uniform quality of products delivered to various clients and systems.
•Must be current with new technologies related to Post Production.
•Be capable of delivering quality productions as well as training others and being a resource to others in the department.
Prior experience with comedic editing highly desirable.
This position is a key member of the content production team. It is important that this person be highly creative, artistic and able to deal with the industry trends and have advanced technical skill in editing. This person must have the artistic skill and ability to tell an effective story in various duration, edit effectively, content that meets and exceeds BYUB standards. Will need to have a deep knowledge of all aspects of the Post-Production process. In addition, they need to know how to find, organize, inspire and manage people for the best results. This position must be current in industry trends, styles and techniques. This position must be available limited nights and weekends to fulfill project needs and meet deadlines. This position must be an excellent communicator, mentor, organizer and supervisor of team.
