Position Summary:
The Communications Manager, Student Affairs directs, designs, and disseminates strategic communications in support of the Student Affairs Division as a fully integrated member of LMU’s Marketing and Communications team. Reporting to the Director of Internal Communications, this embedded professional oversees engagement efforts across Student Affairs by managing the development, maintenance, appearance, and functionality of promotional and communication vehicles utilized to engage students in their co-curricular life on campus; including, but not limited to the Student Affairs website, social media, newsletters, and portals. The incumbent ensures that communications promote goodwill, align with the university’s mission and goals, and advance Student Affairs and the university’s strategic priorities and brand strategy as part of a broader, synchronized, multi-disciplinary team of communications professionals.
Position Specific Responsibilities:
Manage and implement concurrent, interdependent short-, medium-, and long-term communications projects that support both the university’s and Student Affairs goals and priorities. Implement and support an integrated visual identity system, editorial schedule, and production calendar for all Student Affairs communications activities.
Create and curate content (feature stories, spotlights, etc.) to be disseminated across various communications channels. Produce, edit, and approve traditional and digital communications products that support Student Affairs activities and programs and engage identified target audiences.
Ensure projects are completed by identified deadlines and on budget. Assure successful outcomes by adopting best-practice project management methodologies, quality assurance metrics, and risk mitigation plans. Assure the integrity, high-quality, and consistency of the university’s image, tone, style, narrative, visual identity, and brand.
Direct Student Affairs social media and web strategies to create a unified and visually cohesive representation of Student Affairs goals and learning outcomes.
Lead/manage Student Affairs staff internal communications efforts.
Ensure all Student Affairs information vehicles represent the most accurate dissemination of program overviews, event dates, signature highlights, staff accolades and accomplishments.
Maintain the integrity and accuracy of published information while seeking new and innovative ways to improve the presentation of content, functionality and design of all Student Affairs communications.
Ensure quality assurance standards are applied to and integrated with all work and projects. Review and monitor compliance with branding standards, visual identity and messaging guidelines. Audit digital media channels and recommend solutions. Devise plans and educate clients regarding alternative approaches and emerging trends.
Coordinate with university communications professionals to incorporate Student Affairs objectives into broader communications and marketing activities, talking points, presentations, reports, social media efforts, and other channels.
Provide guidance and leadership on emerging trends, content, design, presentation and production of co-curricular engagement tools and platforms.
Guide colleagues, content providers, campus administrators and freelancers in a variety of topics including writing styles, design and functionality. Recommend information architecture approaches and photography selections. Review and/or proofread client copy/design/functionality and report whether objectives are being met.
Perform other duties as assigned or requested by leadership.
Minimum of four years’ experience in a higher-education or non-profit setting preferred, with proven skills, knowledge and ability in communications and/or marketing. Ability to work effectively and independently with internal and external constituencies and with professionals of varied disciplines to accomplish tasks and projects.
Demonstrated experience managing and executing across multiple communications and marketing channels and media; highly developed skills in communications writing and editing.
Highly collaborative style with experience developing and implementing communications strategies successfully; background that demonstrates relationship-building, consensus-building, flexibility, and managing through influencing.
Self-starter, able to work independently and entrepreneurially; experience creating, developing and implementing new initiatives.
Demonstrated computer competency with common production software suites, such as photo editing software, email marketing tools, and analytics reporting software.
Effective project planning and project management skills are required along with the ability to multi-task.
Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, as is the ability listen with the skill to gather critical, accurate information.
Experience working in and/or with large-scale organizations which utilize processes to review and approve ideas and enterprise solutions to deliver services.
Ability to brainstorm, synthesize multiple concepts and think strategically.
Ability to work effectively, independently and collaboratively with different constituencies and with creative, communications and technical professionals to accomplish group tasks and projects is required.
Must be able to perform successfully in a fast-paced, intellectually intense, and service-oriented environment. Willing and able to adjust to changing demands and shifting priorities.
Required Education:
Typically a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or business management preferred or equivalent experience. Master’s degree preferred. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills and abilities needed to stay abreast of best practices and industry trends.
