Senior Officer, Advocacy and Communications, Global Health
Employment Opportunity - Washington, DC - Full Time
The Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer, Global Health is responsible for general strategic advocacy and communications planning for the United Nations Foundation’s global health portfolio, as well as advocacy and communications planning and implementation for the UN Foundation’s engagement with, among others, the World Health Organization, the Measles & Rubella Initiative, and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Senior Advocacy Communications Officer, Global Health will secure and maintain relationships with advocacy and communications networks including the press and partners in order to promote the work undertaken by the UN Foundation and the UN to advance key global challenges. The Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer, Global Health will also be tasked with creating official statements, news releases, donor materials, and talking points for representatives of the UN Foundation and its partners through various partner working groups. The Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer, Global Health is a member of both the UN Foundation’s Public Affairs Team and the Global Health Team and reports primarily to the Vice President for Global Health Strategy, with a dotted line to Chief Communications Officer. The Senior Advocacy and Communications Officer, Global Health works closely with advocacy and communications leads for UNF campaigns and initiatives such as the Measles & Rubella Initiative to help inform global health content and collaborate around key opportunities.
Cross-Cutting Advocacy and Communications
Develop and oversee strategic advocacy communications planning and implementation for UN Foundation’s cross-cutting global health priorities, including digital, editorial, media, fundraising and partner-facing components as needed, clearly articulating and pursuing goals and metrics.
Provide strategic guidance on positioning relevant global health issues to broader UN Foundation target audiences, working in close consultation with the UN Foundation Public Affairs team.
Develop and manage strategic advocacy and communications planning and implementation for support to the World Health Organization, including marquee events like the World Health Assembly.
Develop and maintain strong strategic relationships with senior advocacy and communications counterparts at the UN Foundation partner organizations and other United Nations agencies related to health.
Together with UN Foundation’s Media Communications Officer, conceptualize, develop and manage occasional global health press fellowships and ongoing engagement of former journalist fellows.
Implement strategy to communicate with media, donors, partner organizations and other target audiences about the UN Foundation’s work in global health.
Represent UN Foundation’s work in global health to key outside audiences.
Write talking points, event briefings, press releases, donor material and other content, as needed.
Support the overall efforts of the Public Affairs and Global Health staff as directed.
Measles & Rubella Initiative (M&RI) Advocacy and Communications
Advise, inform and support the joint communications planning of M&RI Resource Mobilization and Communications working groups to develop advocacy and communication work plans with partners, highlighting key events, donors, press opportunities to target and implement throughout the year to leverage communications oriented to donors.
Strategically develop and manage communications and advocacy partnerships and implement strategies related to work with the M&RI.
Elevate the work of the M&RI to reach new audiences and potential champions, including through positioning thought leaders and experts in the M&RI/immunization space, to foster resource mobilization.
Enhance potential donor outreach by developing targeted storytelling and advocacy materials as part of the M&RI Strategic Communications Working Group.
Align M&RI advocacy and communications strategies through coordination with M&RI resource mobilization partner focal points as well as across relevant teams at UNF including Shot@Life to implement resource mobilization efforts globally.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with relevant staff at respective M&RI partner agencies and other immunization stakeholders to further collective advocacy opportunities.
Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) Advocacy and Communications
Strategically develop and manage communications partnerships and implement UNF communications strategies related to work with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
Elevate the work of GPEI to reach new audiences and potential champions through strategic communications and advocacy tactics.
Collaborate across relevant team at UNF, including Shot@Life, to develop mutually beneficial communications and advocacy strategies and tactics.
Cultivate and maintain relationships with communications staff at respective GPEI partner agencies and other immunization stakeholders.
BS or BA required in communications, journalism, or a related field; with a minimum of 7-9 years in public affairs, journalism or public relations related to global public health. Advanced degree and/or training in public health a significant plus.
Previous experience in curation and management of digital channels, including blogs, social media platforms, and other online media.
Proven experience in project management and strategic planning.
Experience with partner relations and building coalitions for advocacy and communications.
Demonstrated experience in the field of communications and global public health. Working knowledge of the UN and multilateral institutions a plus.
On-the-record media experience with a proven track record of obtaining media coverage for organizations and issues.
Excellent editing and writing skills.
Management experience preferred.
Team player with the ability to work independently.
Good organizational skills and ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
This is a U.S. based with preference to Washington D.C.
Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
