The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington is a nationally ranked education and research program. Located on the main Seattle campus of the University of Washington, UW Electrical Engineering currently supports greater than 750 undergraduate and graduate students and over 50 active research faculty. UW EE is a dynamic organization that provides comprehensive administrative and advising services in support of our teaching, research and service missions. UW EE is currently seeking a Public Information Specialist position to become a member of our UW EE Public Relations Team. UW EE has an outstanding opportunity for a Public Information Specialist . The Public Information Specialist develops and provides comprehensive, creative communication services to the faculty, staff and students whom comprise the Department of Electrical Engineering (UW EE). The Public Information Specialist will be responsible for the proactive identification, creation and ongoing management of relevant, compelling story leads, based directly on UW EE key research areas (communications\/ networking, electromagnetics\/remote sensing, integrated systems\/circuits\/VLSI, nanotechnology\/MEMS\/photonics, power\/energy, speech\/image\/video processing, systems\/controls\/robotics). This position works independently to develop and generate content which will feed directly into electronic, web, print, social media and video communication materials that effectively leverage department research efforts generated by UW EE distinguished faculty, cutting edge laboratories and outstanding student projects. This position serves as the leader of our EE Public Relations Team, and is responsible for generating appropriate, timely, and accurate information for communication to our internal and external audiences. Leveraging strong relationships and connections with key individuals and groups, this position directly influences and increases the visibility of the Department. JOB FUNCTIONS: PUBLIC RELATIONS VISION AND STRATEGY \u2022Collaborating directly with the EE Department Chair, this position is responsible for managing the overall department communications and public relations vision and strategy. Based on the vision and overall strategy, establish and comprehensively manage short, mid- and long term communication tasks and goals. \u2022Directly manage strategy and implement conversion process from print to electronic collateral for department communications. Provide comprehensive strategic vision and management to effectively transition the department into electronic only formats for annual and semi-annual publications, emails and announcements. \u2022Collaborate directly with UW College of Engineering Marketing and Communications staff to effectively strategize on shared communications coverage, to be shared at the department, college and university level. \u2022Working directly with the EE Chair and EE Events Team, strategize and plan for PR\/communications coverage at all EE events, annual lectures, alumni and department events, weekly colloquium lectures, capstone and class project demonstrations. Assign PR\/communications coverage to publications editor for photo opportunities and social media postings. \u2022Formulate and oversee an annual communications plan and budget. Monitor and measure the impact of communications efforts to evaluate needs and opportunities. \u2022Develop communications success metrics and share with EE Chair on a quarterly basis. CONTENT RESEARCH AND GENERATION \u2022Work proactively with the EE Chair, Associate Chairs, faculty, students and staff to identify stories of interest within UW EE key research areas to identify stories of interest. \u2022Directly collaborate with faculty members and students to obtain topics, gather data, quotes, graphics and photos in support of content development and storytelling efforts. \u2022Conduct interviews with individuals to obtain content, develop stores and testimonials. Work directly with interviewees to establish relationships and comfort levels. Develop interview questions and format interviews to allow for multiple methods of distribution (electronic media, social media, video, etc). \u2022Create and develop all communication features and news articles to be produced and utilized in established EE public relations outlets (electronic media, website, email, print, video, social media, etc). \u2022Regularly meet and engage with faculty to obtain updates and new information on research projects and breakthroughs, and follow on developments. \u2022Provide writing, editing, and creative support, as needed for EE Chair communications and talking points\/speeches. \u2022Measure website metrics and other analytics against communications goals to guide priorities. CONTENT DISEMMINATION \u2022Working with the support of the EE Publications Editor, manage and determine editing and production timelines for standard and special communications. \u2022Select, prioritize and approve final content for PR\/communications distribution. Provide generated content to EE Publications Coordinator and supervisor editing process to ensure products are ready for final production and distribution for use in the Department's annual research magazine (EEK), Department's communication magazine (Integrator), Fact Sheet, electronic media, website, emails, and social media. \u2022Utilizing support from the Publications Editor, ensure accurate and timely postings and communications on external websites, emails, and social media. DIGITAL MEDIA CONTENT CREATION AND GENERATION \u2022Build a strong department visual brand. The brand will inform all outbound communication strategies through thoughtful design and collaboration with key stakeholders. \u2022Based on transcripts from video interviews and established talking points, develop video scripts that meet established goals and expectations. Refine video scripts during post production and provide input into refining overall quality of video during post production. \u2022Independently manage the hiring and use of independent and UW contractors for video production efforts. Based on an established annual budget, work directly with the Department Chair and Department Faculty to identify specific research opportunities suitable for video production. \u2022Generate and integrate graphics, video and text into web content to effectively present information and ideas to target audiences. \u2022Enhance the department\u2019s photography. Hire outside or university photographers to build a photography portfolio. Improve department photography equipment for in-house photography applications. \u2022Coordinate with web development partners (D2) on technical website issues and ongoing maintenance. \u2022Design, create and order departmental publications and promotional materials. Create visual assets for sharing across digital channels. \u2022Produce promotional materials for department-sponsored seminars, academic programs, advancement events and recruitment initiatives. SUPERVISION\/PROJECT MANAGEMENT\/ADMINISTRATION \u2022Directly supervise 1.0 FTE Publications Editor and 1 hourly Student Worker. Provide day to day direct supervision of position to ensure all projects are in positive working status, deadlines are met. \u2022Meet with COE marketing\/communications staff at least monthly to develop efforts and relationships to align communications strategies to highlight EE research at the college level. \u2022Work on other public relations projects as assigned by the UW EE Department Chair or Associate Chair of Research. Regularly report progress and status of projects to Chair. \u2022Collaborate directly with UW EE faculty to manage and showcase research efforts displayed in EE front office and building lobby. Meet proactively with faculty to obtain information and leads on content creation, and prioritize communications of student projects, awards and presentations. With support from the Publications Editor, ensure all department awards and display cases showcase current research efforts and are updated on a quarterly basis. \u2022Remain current on trends in content marketing and public relations. Build technical skills and understand current and emerging communication technologies as needed for role. \u2022Collaborate directly with UW EE Committees and Department Staff to ensure adequate communications\/public relations coverage at UW EE events, annual lectures, and weekly colloquium lectures. \u2022Write, develop and maintain new and existing PR\/communications process documents for department faculty and staff. REQUIREMENTS: \u2022Bachelor\u2019s degree in Public Relations, Communication, Marketing, Journalism, English or related field. \u20224-5 years of experience in writing and editing technical content, marketing\/communications. \u2022Proven expertise in writing content and developing targeted messages, creating communications intended for diverse audiences. Must be able to write effective, engaging communications that directly relate to overall strategic message and goals. \u2022Demonstrated experience in using social media for successful business communications and outcomes. \u2022Strong organization and project planning skills. Attention to detail, strong work ethic and must have the ability to focus on both large project\/long term organization and consistent messaging as well as small scale copy and messaging. \u2022Strong proficiency with computer skills, including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Final Cut Pro, Dreamweaver and HTML skills. \u2022Must be able to work in fast paced, dynamic environment, with the ability to be flexible and work under pressure. \u2022Proficiency using Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, Power Point), Adobe Creative Suite, Marketo and WordPress. Equivalent education\/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license\/certification\/registration. DESIRED: \u2022Supervisory experience desired; managing student and staff employees utilizing project management tools and resources. \u2022Experience interviewing and developing stories based on interview content. Be able to effectively work with diverse groups of people (faculty, staff, students, friends, alumni). \u2022Experience with higher education institutions and\/or marketing in a complex organization.
