I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
George Washington University’s Media Relations Specialist for research and science will promote the university’s scientific and research efforts, including social and physical sciences in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the GW Virginia Science and Technology Campus, the School of Nursing, and special university research initiatives. The ideal candidate has experience as a news reporter and has superb writing and editing skills, with a proven track record of translating complicated research and science into material that is interesting and easy to understand.
Responsibilities of the Media Relations Specialist include:
Advises and coordinates with university leadership and faculty in beat areas to identify and develop opportunities for media coverage of university experts, announcements and initiatives. Works independently and exercises independent judgment in pitching stories to news media, facilitating interviews with GW leaders and experts, responding to media inquiries, and serving as a media relations representative at high profile events. Develops and maintains relationships with external media.
Works independently to conduct research, interviews, and writes and edits copy for external media and university publications. Writes news releases, news tips cutline, etc, for dissemination to the news media. Prepares media reports and other information to highlight media placements.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Experience managing media logistics for high profile events and developing and implementing media strategy and tactics; to include pitching and staffing media interviews and advising administrators on media relations strategy and tactics.
Experience serving as a spokesperson is highly desired.

Hours Per Week:
Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Essential: Employees who perform functions that have been deemed essential to maintaining business or academic operations. Employees are generally expected to work from home during an event and may be asked to physically report to work.
