Reporting to the Vice President of Investor Relations & Communications, the Investor Relations Manager is responsible for developing and executing the investor relations program in collaboration with the VP of IR and Communications.  Using discretion when working with confidential information concerning the company, executive management and employees is a must.

Primary Responsibility

The IR Manager collaborates with the VP of IR and Communications in developing and executing the IR strategy, operating plans, budget, and overall IR program. The primary operating objective of the IR program is to educate and update investors and security analysts about the company to achieve a fair relative stock price. The program must accurately represent and reflect the company.

Primary Internal and External Relationships

Internal relationships: Chairman, CEO & President, COO, Chief Financial Officer, Controller and accounting department, SEC Counsel, leaders in operating divisions, and their staffs.

External relationships: Institutional investors (including security analysts, portfolio managers, directors of research, investment department heads, and strategists), individual investors, stock brokerage security analysts and their directors of research, credit analysts, debtholders and business and financial media.


Specific Responsibilities

                        Strategic leadership

·         Directs and executes the collection, analysis, and presentation of feedback to the company of investors’ perceptions and opinions, brokerage security analysts’ positions and summaries, relative stock price movements, and periodic ownership analysis. The analysis is provided and presented to the senior leaders and the Board of Directors in written and oral form. In the absence of the VP of IR and Communications, this leader responds to related questions from the senior leaders and Board of Directors.

·         Collaborates in executing the investor relations program, including strategy (linked to the company’s strategy), operating plan, budget, and the detailed execution of the IR operating plan.

·         Collaborates with the VP of IR and Communications and the Media and Communications Manager in creating the company’s external and internal messages and in ensuring that all company external and internal communications are integrated and consistent.

·         Speaks on behalf of the company at investment presentations, institutions, individual meetings and with the financial media.

Investor Relations Strategy, Plan, and Execution

·         Collaborates with the VP of IR and Communications on the development of the IR strategy, operating plan, and budget.

o   Executes the IR program, which is shown below in more detail

o   Educates and updates investors and analysts.

o   Executes the creation of publications and electronic media used in the IR program.

o   Leads presentations and discussions in the IR program.

·         Educates and updates investors and analysts:

o   Keeps shareholders knowledgeable about the company

o   Finds, supports, and encourages prospective investors by broadening awareness and interest through conferences, presentations, meetings, media, and mailings.

o   Hosts conference calls, prepares conference call scripts and practice questions (with answers when needed), and attends practice sessions.  Contracts for conference call services.

o   In collaboration with the VP of IR and Communications, supports the investors’ decision-making processes through visits to institutions, individual meetings, visits by analysts and investors to company subdivisions, and visits with appropriate other senior leaders.

o   Is the office of record for public disclosure to investors.

o   Contracts for and directs the capital markets database and intelligence system that supports the investor relations program.

·         Creates or assists in creating the publications and electronic media used in the IR program:

o   Quarterly results and other news releases

o   Periodic update of the outlook for the quarter and or year results

o   SEC filings: collaborates with the VP of IR and Communications, accounting staff, general counsel, and legal staff.

o   Executes webcasts, usually in conjunction with conference calls and investment conference presentations. Contracts for webcasts.

o   Collaborates with the VP of IR and Communications, Media and Communications Manager, Marketing department staff and third-party web hosting company on the IR website and content.

o   Supports the IR website archive of historical information for investors.

·         Collaborates with VP of IR and Communications in making presentations and discussions in the IR program, including as possible speaker:

o   Presentations at broker-sponsored and company-hosted conferences and meetings.

o   Discussions with analysts and review of draft reports for accuracy of publicly disclosed information.

o   Supports visits by the VP of IR and Communications and other senior leaders to institutional investors.

o   Supports visits by investors to the company headquarters and to the company subdivisions

o   Prepares/coordinates presentations at internal company meetings.

Support to the company

·         Collaborates with CFO, Treasurer, Director of Finance & VP of IR and Communications to support relations with debtholders, credit analysts and rating agencies.

·         Collaborates with Financial Reporting, Financial Analysis, Marketing, and others, as needed.

·         Collaborates on and assists with trade shows and special events.

·         Assists with annual, general, and special shareholder meetings (collaborates with the General Counsel/Secretary and VP of IR and Communications as needed).


·         Leads his or her own IR professional and career development.

·         Remains current on economic, political, regulatory, industry, and stock market outlook.

·         Understands in depth the company’s leaders, strategies, operating units, technologies, and financial performance expectations.

·         Remains current on company operations.

·         Contributes to and learns from company meetings.

·         Remains current on changes in accounting, technology, and similar subjects.

·         Collaborates with the VP of IR and Communications on the continuous upgrade of computer and software skills, as well as use of outside services, to benefit from technology leverage.


·         Administrates presentations and meetings with investors and analysts.

·         Creates routine analyses and reports.

·         Responds to special requests.

·         Attends training.

·         Manages selection, education, tasking, and supervision of outside consultants and service providers for IR

·         Manages calendar and appointments, including meetings, conference calls and conference room arrangements

·         Coordinates travel arrangements and conference registrations


·         In collaboration with or in the absence of the Media and Communications Manager:

o   Screen calls/emails received at the Corporate office

o   Monitor internet for items related to DHI and peers

o   Help enforce the Company’s communication policy

o   Review of division advertorials and press responses for correct grammar, punctuation, etc. and compliance with communication policy

§  Facilitate Corporate legal review of above as needed

·         Fill out surveys such as the Builder 100 and Local Leaders requests from Builder Magazine




·         In collaboration with or in the absence of the Media and Communications Manager:

o   Assist in preparation for operating committee, mid-year and/or year-end meetings

o   Draft annual Division President/City Manager bonus plans

·         Other projects as assigned

·         Strong interpersonal skills, superior intellect, and an outstanding ability to communicate using these qualities and skills.

·         An energetic, efficient, and resourceful team player and individual contributor.

·         Proficiency with the latest computer technology, particularly Microsoft Office (strong Excel and PowerPoint skills a necessity)

o   Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or business administration preferred

o   Certified Public Accountant highly desired

·         More than five years of experience in investor relations or accounting for a public company or in public accounting
