We are building a Corporate Communications Team to plan, seek and share resonant stories that advance reputation and awareness of the iconic McDonald’s brand. This team will be comprised of creative, innovative and disciplined storytellers that develop and elevate our narrative by sharing a relevant voice through earned and owned content while protecting and advancing the brand.
Key areas of focus for the Corporate Communications Team include global, U.S. national and local media relations, product communications, financial communications, crisis management and global narrative and message development. We are looking for a Corporate Communications Media Relations Manager, who is a media relations expert, with a passion to bring the story of the iconic McDonald’s brand to life. This role will primarily focus on creative ways to tell the story of how McDonald’s is reimagining what the food business looks like through earned media. There will also be opportunities in the role to support people, customer experience and corporate social responsibility storytelling. Another key responsibility includes effective collaboration with cross-functional communications and business unit teams as strategic partner and media relations subject matter expert.
This role is based at McDonald’s Headquarters in the West Loop of Chicago and reports to the Senior Director of Corporate Communications.

This role requires at least 5-7 years of previous experience, preferably in a corporate or political communications role or agency. This person will have a can-do attitude, be strategic and a solutions-focused leader with the following attributes:
You have On the record experience with national and local media for a publicly traded and global brand.
You are a natural storyteller with excellent speaking, writing and editing skills.
Strong business knowledge with a demonstrated ability to understand business strategy and how to use communications as a mechanism to drive that strategy.
Media crisis and issues management experience.
Experience working with agencies.
The ability to thrive in fast-paced environments, while being flexible, collaborative and deadline driven.
The ability to influence without authority and motivate others toward common objectives.
Proven ability to support and counsel senior-level executives.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Experience in project management and large-scale event planning/implementation.
Communications experience including message development, message distribution via myriad channels, dealing with reporters, and writing communications plans.
You use insights and knowledge of business priorities and reporter interests to develop creative approaches to amplify our brand reputation narrative through earned media to reach targeted audiences.
You are able to Develop earned media strategies to bring to life U.S. and global marketing amplification activations that support business priorities.
You've lead media relations for all communications programs related to food and menu innovation—support ranges from pitching opportunistic stories to supporting product news, tests and rollouts. Support other communications programs, when possible.
Develop and maintain relationships with relevant reporters and outlets.
As a subject matter expert, you will triage and manage issues and crisis pertaining to our food and menu.
Provide communications and media relations support, including media training, to key subject matter experts on food innovation and nutrition across the company.
Develop communications materials, including but not limited to: media pitches, releases, statements, strategic communications plans, question and answer documents and owned assets.
You have the ability to constantly mine for potential news angles and data to support opportunistic storytelling.
Serve as media relations subject matter expert for food and menu innovation teams, such as U.S. marketing and menu innovation, nutrition teams and subject matter experts across the company.
Work collaboratively with the U.S. field communications managers in the development of media strategy to support the food narrative and support strategies that earn coverage across national media and local TV markets.
Collaborate with all communications partners and business units to develop an annual proactive communications plan that builds reputation around McDonald’s food and menu innovation and amplifies the narrative to support business objectives.
Develop an annual plan to elevate the food innovation narrative through earned media informed by a deep understanding of business objectives, communications needs and opportunities.
Narrative and Editorial Plan Development
Work closely with Global and U.S. Communications colleagues to plan and execute communications initiatives that deliver food and menu messages to key internal and external stakeholders and audiences.
Partner with channel and content development teams to generate assets that amplify the food narrative and can be localized to support earned and owned storytelling across the globe.
Work with the broader global communications team to insert media relations insights into the development of the broader corporate narrative.
The success of this role will be determined by:
Effective partnership and collaboration as a strategic partner and media relations subject matter expert to the business and the cross-functional corporate relations teams.
Successfully executing an ongoing cadence of positive food and menu innovation stories through local earned media channels across national and global outlets, and 210 U.S. DMAs that support brand and business objectives.
Improving food quality reputation scores among consumers and opinion elites.
