Communications Associate - Public Health
**MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is seeking a Communications Associate to join our Center for Healthy Women and Children (CHWC) to support a multi-year Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services funded Medi-Cal 2020 waiver program called the Dental Transformation Initiative that is designed to reduce the burden of childhood dental disease in California. The position may be located in Ann Arbor, MI or Washington, DC.
As a Communications Associate, you will put in place (in collaboration with our client and partners) a communication plan to assist with rapidly improving the oral health of children in Los Angeles County. Through innovative methods of identifying children at high risk for dental disease, facilitating their access to appropriate and effective oral health interventions, and monitoring their progress, you’ll be helping to lead a first of its kind program to reduce dental caries – the most common chronic disease among children.
The CHWC’s mission is to improve the health of women and children by strengthening health promotion programs and systems, care coordination, and the use of preventive health services. As a Communications Associate, you’ll have the opportunity to support a variety of other CHWC projects, shape the Center’s overall communications strategy, and participate in diffusion activities to promote expansion of effective interventions to other states. You’ll work with a passionate, innovative team of public health professionals, analysts, and researchers.
Under the general direction of the Health Communications Associate, the Communications Associate will lead tasks as part of a larger team, organize and shepherd outreach materials and tasks through creative and production lifecycle, and communicate with staff and clients. Specific responsibilities include the following:
Identify and recommend existing resources or develop new materials for health education that are appropriate for the target audiences, including written and audio-visual materials
Conduct brainstorming sessions to develop creative communications strategies for clients and CHWC
Consult with physicians, dentists, and community stakeholders for input on health education materials for patients and project outreach communications that are linguistically appropriate with language at an appropriate educational level
Assist with content and design updates to the project website, and support social media outreach to facilitate stakeholder relationship building
Support the coordination and development of program catalogs, media kits, newsletters, informational displays, community health events packets, etc.
Support successful implementation of a culturally competent communication plan across all project components as it relates to patient education materials, education and technical assistance for primary care providers and dentists, community outreach, and Health Information Technology that facilitates referrals and care management between medical and dental care settings
Provide professional client interface, ensure responsiveness to client requirements and concerns
Help to disseminate project results to expand the interventions to other states and communities
Assist with graphic design and related needs for projects across the Center
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, graphic design or related field
Two years of experience working in communications and/or public relations, preferably for government or community organizations, Medicaid/CHIP populations, and/or healthcare or public health stakeholders
Outstanding writing skills, and experience developing and editing high-quality written materials, including: client educational materials, fact sheets, infographics, posters, and reports
Expertise using Adobe InDesign and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other standard software is required
Familiarity with requirements of the Federal Government Printing Office Style Manual and/or Section 508 compliance is a plus
Ability to organize and coordinate complex projects and meet deadlines under different leads
Innate customer service mentality and experience working directly with clients
Ability to solve problems quickly and creatively
