The University of Arizona Health Sciences (


) is seeking a highly qualified professional for the role of Director of Communications and Media Relations who will be responsible for leading and implementing day-to-day communications including general content development, media relations, media monitoring and reporting, and issues/crisis management. The position will be located at UAHS’s campus in Phoenix.

The position is responsible for planning and executing general content and media relations strategies that support UAHS’s educational and research objectives, and for ensuring communications and media relations activities are coordinated with UAHS’s colleges and centers in Tucson and Phoenix, its Banner Health partnership, and the University of Arizona main campus.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop and implement general content and media relations plans that keep


, its programs, and its education and research achievements top of mind among key external audiences, including prospective students and faculty, alumni, donors, and other affinity groups.

Cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with members of the local and regional media.

Maintain and nurture relationships with reporters, editors, assignment editors, producers, executive producers, etc.

Manage complex media issues that affect UAHS’s reputation, operations, resources, and advancement; working closely with team leadership to develop appropriate responses and statements, FAQs and talking points, and manage interactions with media.

Coordinate closely with communications/media relations units within the


colleges and centers in Tucson and Phoenix, the Banner Health partnership, and the University of Arizona to identify and develop general story ideas, cultivate subject matter experts, respond to media inquiries, ensure consistency and continuity of overall messaging, and avoid duplication of effort and resources.

Coordinate with marketing and communications staff responsible for media relations strategies that support UAHS’s development activities; enhance its development campaigns, activities and programs; and support its philanthropic success.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required.

Minimum of 7 years of related work experience, including 3 years of managerial experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to develop content across digital, social and traditional media platforms for general and media audiences.

Demonstrated ability to secure media coverage that elevates awareness and engagement.
