With direction from the Assistant Director of Public Relations & Corporate Communications, plans, manages, edits and writes narratives for Johns Hopkins Medicine to support our strategic priorities, with an emphasis on comprehensive communications assets for Technology Ventures and other business agreements and innovative collaborations as assigned. Efforts will support the growth of Technology Ventures through increased awareness, demand, and/or revenue growth. Communications strategies will include identifying and producing stories and high quality written materials for Johns Hopkins Medicine electronic, print, web, video and media outlets. Stories include but are not limited to news releases on business and technology topics, research news and translating complex business initiatives or biomedical research into language that is clear and comprehensible to readers unfamiliar with the subject matter while also appealing to a targeted business savvy audience; feature articles and stories about institutional initiatives and programs and/or faculty profiles.

Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, staff and members of the local and national media to provide media relations services to advance public awareness of Technology Ventures and Johns Hopkins Medicine's mission and achievements. Assist in planning, developing collateral material, and implementing media relations and internal communications to support various events including but not limited to press conferences, symposia, town hall meetings and leadership internal communication. Supports progress in Johns Hopkins Medicine internet marketing strategy, applying strategic use of digital mediums to Technology Ventures and related business collaborations.

Minimum Requirements:

Master's or Bachelor's degree in life sciences, science writing, English, journalism or communications required.

Demonstrated experience in supervising and implementing effective external and internal communications plans and strategies in editing/writing publications; experience in working with national and regional news media; and knowledge of the business of medicine, healthcare innovations and technology as well as an academic medical center culture and organization. Depending on area of focus, demonstrated experience with scientific and technical writing may be necessary. Effective use of communication tools, including print, Web, media relations, electronic media and other e-communication tools; AP Style and ability to apply institutional style standards consistently. Familiarity with media tracking services and databases preferred. Experience with issues management preferred.

A minimum of five years of experience in business, technology and health writing, journalism, media relations or public affairs is required. Requires demonstrated experience in high quality writing and editing, working successfully on deadline and designing and implementing communications plans and strategies. Demonstrated experience in supervising and implementing effective and external and internal communications plans and strategies and in editing/writing high-quality publications is required.

Proven skills in complex narrative writing, including the ability to translate medical, technical, scientific or statistical information for lay and other audiences. Requires strong communication skills and proven ability to precisely and objectively communicate information and give and receive clear messages; ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment and effectively prioritizing and managing multiple projects at once, while setting and meeting demanding deadlines; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; sound judgment and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; demonstrated excellence in narrative writing and editing. Ability to work effectively and independently with highest levels of faculty.
