Reporting to the Vice President of Communications & Marketing, the Senior Director of Communications will lead and manage all aspects of Fred Hutch’s strategic external and internal communications efforts. Core to your mission will be building the Center’s national reputation through earned media placements and social media engagement, and positioning Fred Hutch as a leader and expert resource in cancer and related diseases. Key functional areas of responsibility include media relations, executive communications, internal communications, social media strategy and issues management. You will also collaborate with counterparts responsible for marketing, content and web design, as well as colleagues in Philanthropy, Government & Community Relations and Business Development on integrated communications and marketing initiatives.



Elevate visibility of Fred Hutch as preeminent cancer research institution; position organization as national leader in quest to cure cancer.

Develop and lead execution of proactive earned and shared media strategy supporting organizational and brand goals that encompasses traditional and digital media, as well as integrated social media engagement.

In collaboration with VP of Communications & Marketing and heads of Integrated Marketing and Content, develop and implement messaging architecture encompassing Center’s mission and vision to serve as foundation for internal and external communications initiatives and proactive media relations.

Develop and oversee strategic communications campaigns for diverse scientific research, medical and public education ventures; develop and place compelling stories in support of overarching organizational goals and marketing, fundraising, partnership and public policy objectives.

Identify and forge relationships with top-tier media and other influencers; serve as organizational spokesperson.

Oversee media tours and events, as well as preparation of pitches, briefings, news releases, fact sheets, talking points and other supporting content to execute earned media strategy.

Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization; develop and lead comprehensive crisis planning and issues management strategy, including supporting messaging and tools for proactive and reactive issues management.

In collaboration with VP, formulate and drive executive communications strategy to enhance national visibility of senior leadership, including employing new online and offline channels and opportunities for exposure, influence and engagement with key audiences.

Collaborate with HR and senior leadership to formulate strategy and regular cadence of internal communications tactics to keep Fred Hutch employees informed, engaged and focused on achieving organizational mission and goals; facilitate development of internal communications content and tools to support strategy.

Collaborate effectively with Communications & Marketing colleagues; internal stakeholders in Philanthropy, Government & Community Relations and Business Development; and partners at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and UW Medicine to ensure alignment and integrated communications, marketing and content strategies.

Build, manage and mentor a high-performing team of communicators to meet evolving organizational needs and execute communications strategy.

Set performance metrics and ensure regular tracking, analysis and organizational reporting of earned media exposure.

Manage and track communications budget and expenditures, ensuring effective budget utilization; work with Finance and Senior Business Director on budget planning and forecasting, and business cases for incremental investment.

Select, manage and collaborate with external consultants and vendors; develop and maintain contracts; and monitor progress to ensure deliverables are being met within budget.

Relentlessly scan professional landscape and sources of communications insight for trends and best practices to improve brand engagement and communications ROI.



Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or related field required; advanced degree preferred.

Minimum of 15 years of experience in communications, media relations, public relations, marketing or related field with increasing levels of responsibility/oversight; healthcare, research and/or non-profit experience preferred.

Demonstrated success with proactive national media placements; established relationships with healthcare/science/business media strongly preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of management experience, with proven success developing teams of communicators, including establishing performance metrics and encouraging best practices, career growth and continuous learning.


Persuasive spokesperson and presenter, with excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to create clear and persuasive communications in all forms, traditional and digital, and with varying audiences.

Demonstrated ability to distill complex information (science, research, technology) into compelling messages for general audiences.

Strong track record of success building relationships with top-tier reporters and editors, landing high-impact placements and implementing social media as part of an integrated communications strategy.

Experience setting performance metrics and measuring earned media placements, sentiment and ROI.

Conversant in online and offline marketing principles and earned and social media’s function within mix of paid, earned, shared and owned channels for optimal impact and audience engagement.

Analytically minded approach and good problem-solving skills, coupled with creative orientation.

Excellent judgment and ability to act independently and decisively with urgency in the face of internal and external change and crises.

Comfort level working at all levels of organization and with diverse group of stakeholders and knowledge bases.
