Duties

Full – time 40 hours per week as assigned, including occasional evenings and weekends

Under supervision of the Associate Director of Collection Services, the Selection Coordinator works with the selection team, vendors, staff and other content stakeholders to efficiently build on and improve District of Columbia Public Library's (DCPL) collection for a designated content area. This position is responsible for the selection and management of popular front list adult print (fiction and non-fiction with large print runs and extensive publicity campaigns), Young Adult and adult graphic novels and media. This position specializes in highly popular content.

The incumbent is also responsible for finding, developing and implementing new and innovative library collections and products.

Select and coordinate material for DCPL’s 26 locations in designated content area.

Manage budget effectively in designated collection areas to optimize circulation, customize for branch-level needs.

Work collaboratively with managers to determine scope; lead and direct frontline staff in best practices for managing the collection in designated content areas.

Collect, share and analyze usage data as part of the selection process.

Explore and implement new and innovative library materials, products, and services that would be appropriate for branch circulation.

Work collaboratively with Public Services Managers to gather information about community reading needs.

Residency Requirement

A person applying for a position in the Career Service, Educational Service, Management Supervisory Service, an attorney position in the Legal Service (series 905) other than the Senior Executive Attorney Service (SEAS), or an attorney position in the Excepted Service (series 950) who is a bona fide District resident AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Conditions of Employment

General Suitability Screening

This position is subject to general suitability screening; verification of employment history, reference checks and degree/license, as applicable. The appointee to the position may be offered employment contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory general suitability screening.

Enhanced Suitability Screening

The position for which the individual is applying has been identified and designated as requiring enhanced suitability screening; If tentatively selected for the position, a criminal background check, traffic record check, consumer credit check, and mandatory drug and alcohol test will be conducted (as appropriate); and the appointee to the position may be offered employment contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory enhanced suitability screening.

Employment Benefits

Selectee will be eligible for health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the District of Columbia government's retirement plan. However, if selectee was previously employed in the District of Columbia government under an appointment for which he/she was eligible for Civil Service Retirement (CSR), contributions to CSR will resume upon re-employment.

Qualifications:

MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution required.

At least three (3) years of experience using spreadsheets.

Acquisitions module experience preferred.

At least one (1) year of experience selecting books in a Library, Bookstore, or related environment.

At least one (1) year of experience managing a collection.

At least one (1) year of experience collecting or using data in Collection decision-making.

At least one (1) year of Customer Service experience.

At least one (1) year of experience in long-range planning and budget.

At least on year experience as a project lead or coordinating experience.

Additional Qualifications

Project management skills; Knowledge of best practices in collection development; passion for designated content area (popular material) Proven ability to employ changing technologies and to seek applicable training to enhance such skills.
