Under the direct supervision of the Sr. Director of Healthy Living, the Director of Communications & Member Engagement cultivates relationships with members and the community to further the YMCA mission, increase program participation and member involvement in YMCA activities. This position follows and promotes the YMCA philosophy in a fast-paced environment, and delivers mission-driven messaging to the community and constituency consistently to strengthen the Y’s position as a leading charitable organization in Greater Waterbury.


The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, graphic design or related field knowledge.

Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite or In Design and Illustrator a plus. Candidate must possess extremely strong writing and communication skills and be able to formulate impactful stories and publications via social media, print media, signage and mailings. Candidate should have strong knowledge of social media marketing including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Prior Daxko knowledge preferred but not required. Membership budget development knowledge preferred. CPR, First Aid and other required certifications preferred.

Essential Functions

Marketing & Communications

Under the supervision of the Sr. Director of Healthy Living, maintain strict adherence to YMCA of the USA guidelines and branding for all internal and external signage and communications

Works with the Y’s contracted design firm to maintain and update web site via a word-based content management system and other online media/marketing vehicles and social media. Produce and/or coordinate the production of the session program guide, internal signage, campaign collateral, posters and promotional materials.

Creates the annual organization marketing plan

Coordinates projects with the Y’s contracted design firm and the Sr. Director of Healthy Living, assign and/or produce and distribute informational updates to members, staff donors, community stakeholders and participants i.e. newsletter, video communication board, signage, E newsletters, photos, videos, etc. as needed and according to the organizational marketing plan.

Coordinate YMCA marketing external advertising including press releases, and the like.

Act as a media contact for staff regarding photo opportunities, special events and programming, coordinating volunteers as needed.

Perform research necessary to develop, plan and implement communications (education and outreach) campaigns to help drive membership and community knowledge of mission programs, services & benefits offered.

In coordination with the Development Director, set up and manage secondary fundraising campaigns in Daxko Fundraising for department staff as needed.

Work with the Development Director and Sr. Director of Healthy Living to collect and provide impact stories and measured results for the Annual Report and other fundraising and impact collateral.

Assumes accountability for the budget development and finance administration for programs which position is responsible for.

Corporate Relations

Meet with local companies to establish corporate membership alliances.

Work with corporate members to create special programs to improve employee health and increase participation in YMCA programs.

Secure corporate donations/sponsorships as needed for YMCA fundraisers, etc.

Membership Services

Manage and delegate duties to full time front line welcome center staff, shift leaders and a team of part time welcome staff and ChildWatch staff. Successfully administer and oversee their membership operational duties for a clean database, consistently high sales, new member contact and decreased account bounce rates.

Develop retention programs that connect new and existing members to other programs, classes or benefits at the Y with the goal of engagement and increasing cross-program participation

Hire, train and maintain best-in-class front line welcome center staff and hold regularly scheduled staff meetings.

Assist with the implementation of any of the Y’s Evidence Based Health Intervention programs.

Assist in conducting surveys related to developing new improvements and strategies in specific target areas as well as customer satisfaction and knowledge.

Report monthly on all membership financials, trend reports and activity including building usage and retention.

Special Events

Act in conjunction with the departments to coordinate special events throughout the year that benefit membership.

Attend program events in order to photograph/video events for future use in marketing.

Provide impact results for granting/donor purposes.
