New York Peace Institute

is New York's largest civilian peacebuilding force, helping 10,000 people resolve their disputes peacefully and durably each year. We provide free mediation, community conferencing, restorative circles, and arbitration in order to reduce violence, build peace, and create platforms for people to move forward in the wake of conflict and disruption. We provide these services in Brooklyn and Manhattan in cooperation with community-based organizations, community groups, schools, courts and people from all walks of life.

We also provide customized conflict skills coaching, and comprehensive conflict resolution training. Each year, we train hundreds of individuals in conflict management and communication techniques, and also provide individualized and organizational coaching on conflict management and conflict resolution systems design. Our clients have included the United Nations, NASA, the NYPD, the International Rescue Committee, Harlem Children's Zone, the United Federation of Teachers, the New York City Department of Education, and universities, law firms, international non-governmental organizations, and dozens of community organizations and schools. We provide training locally, nationally, and internationally.

Through mediation services, facilitation, coaching and training, New York Peace Institute aims to build strong, healthy, and sustainable communities and organizations.

Position Description

The Development and Outreach Manager will play a critical role in developing New York Peace Institute's fundraising initiatives, helping to build and manage relationships with donors, and expand awareness about the organization and its mission. This position will be responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of external stakeholders including individuals, foundations, government agencies, business leaders, and the Board of Directors. Working with the management team and other staff, the Development and Outreach Manager will develop and implement communications strategies to reach a wide and diverse audience. The Development and Outreach Manager will be instrumental in raising financial resources to sustain and expand New York Peace Institute.

The Development and Outreach Manager will:

Work closely with the CEO, Operations Director and Training Director to develop and execute an overall fund development plan, including data tracking and analysis to build a robust donor base and ensure that annual goals are met or exceeded each year

Work closely with the Director of Programs and management team to develop and execute outreach strategies to communicate all programs and services to various audiences and the general public

Cultivate and manage relationships with external stakeholders in conjunction with New York Peace Institute management, board members, and volunteers

Develop and implement an annual marketing and communications plan that integrates fundraising and outreach strategies

Oversee coordination and execution of fundraising events

Serve as a public face to the community

Write and prepare grant proposals, renewals, reports, and ensure post-grant award compliance

Research new funding opportunities

Assist in drafting and coordinating annual direct mail solicitations, gift acknowledgment letters and other correspondence with donors

Work with CEO on social media presence and further build online engagement

Assist with website maintenance and developing new content

Conduct presentations about New York Peace Institute to outside agencies and organizations to raise awareness of our services and foster referral relationships.

Build a story bank of people impacted by the organization's work; recruit people to share their experiences

Stay current on industry trends and share information among team

Create or assist with other projects as needed

Develop a strong understanding of the activities of the organization and model New York Peace Institute values


Three-to-five years of development or communications experience with a demonstrated history of growth and an increase in responsibilities within a non-profit organization

Documented experience in successful annual campaign development, soliciting and securing major gifts from both private and public sources, and institutional planning

Superior presentation and interpersonal skills, and the capacity to inspire and motivate prospective donors and other stakeholders; confident and persuasive communicator,

Excellent writing skills, particularly in the area of proposal writing and grant management

Ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders in a multi-cultural environment

Goal-oriented, entrepreneurial spirit with ability to generate ideas and move forward with a well-designed plan

Experience with government grants/contracts a plus

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Ability to manage workflow, prioritize competing demands, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment with skill, calm, and a good sense of humor

Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making

Ability to work both independently with limited supervision and collaboratively with a team

Experience with fundraising databases and funder prospecting sites is preferred

Experience with tracking systems and data collection

Excellent public speaking skills

Passion for New York Peace Institute's mission

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required

Able to use Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher; Word Press, MailChimp: Twitter; LinkedIn; graphic design and desktop publishing skills helpful

Experience with and understanding of managing a fund-raising database

Availability for occasional evening and weekend work when necessary
