Job Description:


JASA, founded in 1968, is one of New York City’s largest agencies serving older adults with a mission to help seniors and disabled individuals remain at home and continue to participate in community life for as long as possible. JASA directly assists more than 43,000 New Yorkers with a wide range of social services, educational and recreational activities, supportive counseling, assistance with securing benefits and entitlements, health-related services, and transportation. JASA also provides home health aides, personal care assistance and nursing services; owns and manages subsidized housing for 2,300 low- to moderate-income and/or disabled adults; distributes over a million meals; and provides critical elder abuse prevention and adult protective services programs. JASA operates a $120 million budget that funds programs in Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx and is a well-established institution and key service-provider for the city’s older adult community.

The Position:

Under the leadership of its CEO, and in anticipation of its 50th anniversary in 2018, the Chief Development and Communications Officer (CDCO)

provides strategic direction and operational management to advance JASA’s mission through growing, refining, and directing a comprehensive and successful development program. This top-level, creative fundraiser works closely with the CEO and Board to build support from individuals, foundations, trusts and corporations, and partners with other senior staff to identify and secure government grants. The CDCO oversees the recognition of all major gifts to JASA, as well as its publicity, promotion and public information activities.

Specific Responsibilities:

· Develop, lead and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy for securing public and private support for both unrestricted and restricted purposes to ensure the institution’s fundraising goals are met

· Oversee cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of all annual and capital gifts

· Motivate and guide a small staff to execute annual and long-term development and communications strategies

· Oversee foundation, corporate and government grant writing

· Research and prospect for new individual and institutional donors Work with Board members to identify, cultivate, and solicit contacts at foundations and corporations

· Build upon and expand CEO’s relationships with major individual and institutional funders

· Act as staff liaison to the Board Committee on Development

· Work with CEO and program staff to develop fundable projects and programs

· Develop and expand JASA’s planned giving program

· Plan and implement fundraising events, including the

· Create and oversee the development of supporting materials for foundation, corporate, and individual solicitations

· Oversee the development of marketing and communication materials, such as newsletters, brochures, invitations, annual report, as well as acknowledgements, cultivation letters, pledge reminder letters, foundation reports, and other stewardship reports

· Develop and monitor the Development Department budget

· Oversee Raiser’s Edge fundraising database

· Keep abreast of funding opportunities and funding trends.

Critical Competencies for Success:

· Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred

· Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising and communications

· Knowledge and nuanced understanding of issues affecting senior adults – social, medical, economic, legal

· Strong visionary who can ensure that development and communications activities align with larger organizational goals and objectives

· Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Ability to present JASA in a compelling and effective manner

· Experience working in a strategic, front-line annual and/or major gifts fundraising position

· Ability to interact effectively with the senior management team, Board members, and program staff

· Demonstrated management ability, with excellent strategic planning and leadership skills

· Strong organizational skills with experience organizing development/communications departments, managing staff, and hiring/overseeing consultants

· Experience in budget preparation, staff management and organizational realignment

· Proven ability to design, implement and evaluate development and communications strategies that yield results

· Computer proficiency; knowledge of Office Suite, Google applications, and Raiser’s Edge software highly desirable.
