Position Summary:

Leads a team and directs strategies to manage the university's reputation and advance its goals. Reports to the vice chancellor for communications and works closely with campus leadership to promote the university through media relations and by sharing key messages with the university's internal and external stakeholders. Manages the department which consists of an assistant director and six public relations specialists who focus on local, statewide and national media relations and internal communication efforts for faculty/staff and students. Works closely with vice chancellor and other administrators to shape public relations strategies for promoting the university's initiatives and managing response plans for crisis and other situations that have potential to impact the university's reputation and its relationships with key stakeholders.

Manages budget, purchasing and other fiscal and administrative tasks; directs all personnel management activities which includes hiring, evaluating and oversight of employee training and development. Oversees the campus's compliance with the Tennessee Public Records Act.

Oversees strategy for gaining positive media placement for the university's faculty experts, key research and overall impact. Builds and maintains relationships with campus communicators and local, statewide and national media representatives.

Writes and edits talking points, speeches, scripts, presentations, administrative briefing documents, news releases and columns to ensure message direction and effectiveness.

Serves on the management team and works closely with department directors on implementing marketing plans that integrate the departments' efforts to pitch and get placement for media stories that help advance the university's goals. Leads efforts to adapt media relations tactics and activities to reflect the fast-changing and dynamic media landscape.

Works with team members to streamline and improve the university's internal communication efforts which includes communication from top administrators, a daily electronic newsletter for faculty and staff and a bi-weekly electronic newsletter for students.

Serves on the campus emergency management team; oversees plans for the university's activation of a Joint Information Center in the event of a full-scale emergency and serving in the role of Public Information Officer in the Incident Command structure. ','!*!Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or related field, Master’s preferred. A minimum of 10 years of experience in public relations or a communications industry role.

Preferred:

Experience working in higher education public relations/communications function. Experience managing people and leading teams.
