Under general direction of the Qualcomm Institute (QI) Director, manages a comprehensive communications program and / or projects for the Qualcomm Institute with routine and / or non-complex communication requirements. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies.
Provide strategic leadership in the development and execution of comprehensive communications, promotion and public relations programs for QI and other departments. Responsible for conceptualizing, planning, and implementing communications strategies and policies to promote and broaden the organization's position and visibility locally, nationally, and internationally. In consultation with Development Director, design & implement proactive and comprehensive communications plans for these areas, while creating news releases and feature articles for internal as well as external distribution. Serve as a public affairs adviser and reach out to electronic and print media outlets to secure local, national and international visibility. Oversee messaging of promotional materials to advance UC San Diego, Calit2, and the Institute's international stature in technology and engineering. Develop and implement communications strategies to reach institutional goals and objectives related to corporate partnerships, development and donor relations, internal communications, UC San Diego alumni relations, and student recruitment. Oversee and direct the management of the institute's presence on Facebook, Twitter and other social media, as appropriate.
Direct the development of QI's Web presence on the Qualcomm Institute and Calit2 websites, and oversee development of other Web sites and interactive Web content for dozens of research centers and labs affiliated with QI, including development of new sites. Oversee editorial content and tone of videos and audio podcasts on behalf of QI itself and other groups on a recharge basis, working in tandem with the Audio-visual group that is responsible for filming and post-production (editing) of such pieces and documentaries.
Direct all editorial efforts to support faculty in submitting large grant proposals, including writing and editing services, as well as managing a senior proposal writer. Produce materials as needed for stewardship of key donors and development prospects by the Institute Director.
Provide advice and guidance to the QI Director and as a member of the QI Executive Council on communications- and strategy-related topics. Collaborate closely with professionals of the Jacobs School, other units and the central UC San Diego communications teams, and manage the work of a variety of vendors (including printers).
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or an allied field; or a minimum of five and preferably 10 years of experience writing about science and technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree preferred.
Extensive advanced experience writing about science and technology for non-technical publications or media outlets.
Strong knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and the most appropriate and effective applications.
Broad knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively manage / supervise professional technical staff, including design concepts, various media and mediums, applications, etc. Demonstrated excellent knowledge of all phases of production in publications, from the editorial plan to final proof, from first layout to delivery.
Strong knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices and infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, issues in higher education and / or health sciences, and / or specialized subject matter.
Strong knowledge of financial and personnel management, including understanding of management techniques, guiding principles, relevant laws, policies and best practices.
Solid management skills to select, train, evaluate, lead, direct, guide and motivate subordinate staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
Solid skills to create, develop and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
Solid knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
