The selectee will serve as a Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist in the Public Affairs.
This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) OASD Defense Press Office. The ASD (PA) is the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense for Department of Defense public information, internal information, Freedom of information, Mandatory Declassification Review, clearance of DoD information for public release, community relations, public affairs professional development, and audiovisual matters. The ASD(PA) has public affairs policy responsibility for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the military services, and the unified and specified commands. Coordinates directly with the White House and State Department at the policy-making levels.
The position of the Deputy Director for Defense Press Office (DPO) is located in the Media Operations organization within OASD (PA). DPO is responsible for (1) assuring that the public is kept adequately informed of the DoD activities; (2) serving as sole agency at the seat of government for the release of official information about the DoD, JCS, and the military services for publication through any form of news media; (3) providing public affairs guidance and assistance to the elements of the DoD; (4) developing and implementing integrated, efficient news policies and procedures for the Department of Defense.

As a Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist, you will be responsible for the following duties:
Directs the day to day operations of a staff of military and civilian public affairs specialists.
Develops and implements policies and procedures relating to the management of the Defense Press Office.
Determines requirements and supervises preparation of newsworthy and informational materials for release about the Department and its components.
Initiates and develops internal policies and procedures relating to the management of the Defense Press Office.
Directs the management of all phases of news conferences/briefings by the Secretary and other senior defense officials.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Identifying concepts, principles, policies, and practices of a Public Affairs Program distinguishing elements of newsworthiness and accurately and succinctly communicating in writing those elements news releases and news and feature articles in a journalistic style using Associated Press guidelines;Editing journalism products for content, style, grammar and punctuation; Writing, or communicating orally to include visual information principles, methods, and techniques to determine the need for, plan, coordinate, conduct, and evaluate Public Affairs and multimedia activities identifying strategic outcomes, developing communications metrics, target audience analysis and implementing all tactical aspects of communications planning and crisis communications; Knowledge of command structure, missions, programs, and organizational relationships and program goals and objectives; Planing, organizing, and leading others in studies or projects and to negotiate effectively with management to accept and implement recommendations; conducting comprehensive studies, and preparing solutions to especially broad, important, and severe operational and contingency areas.
