UW Continuum College has an outstanding opportunity for a Writer/Editor.
Review written content for editorial style, grammar, voice, consistency, readability and adherence to content strategy and standards. Consult with authors to improve content structure, information hierarchy, clarity, flow and relevance of content to readers. Write content for brand communications. Audit content for digital and print project goals, suggesting structural improvements to enhance clarity of information and user experience. Verify facts and data using standard reference sources. Responsible for final approval of assigned content as well as maintaining editorial calendar and editorial style guide. This position requires a thorough understanding of University of Washington, Continuum College and Professional & Continuing Education branding hierarchy, editorial style and content strategy. This position also requires in-depth knowledge of developmental editing, copy editing and proofreading.
The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail balanced with a high-level, big-picture perspective; stellar short-form writing skills; effective written and oral communication skills; solid organizational skills; and an ability to juggle priorities under pressure in a deadline-driven environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
Editing and Writing
o Consult with internal and freelance writers to develop content for publication.
o Apply high-level editorial skills to role, such as developmental editing and high-volume copyediting, to improve long and short form writing.
o Review content and make editorial suggestions for style, grammar, voice, consistency, readability and adherence to content strategy and standards.
o Write, rewrite or make adjustments to content to fit project and audience needs.
o Create a hierarchy of information for projects by synthesizing pieces of new and existing content as needed.
o Review printer proofs and website content to provide final editorial approval for publication.
Project Management & Publication
o Manage editorial calendar for high-profile monthly newsletter.
o Establish timelines for work to be completed and ensure that work is completed in timely manner.
o Responsible for maintaining and distributing editorial style guide and standards, in consultation with creative director.
o Regularly add and update content for website using the content management system, determining appropriate metadata, tagging, categorizing and related content.
o Regularly demonstrate ability to judge appropriate problem resolution.
Research & Content Strategy
o Verify facts and data using standard reference sources.
o Audit assigned content for project goals, suggesting structural improvements to enhance clarity of information and user experience.
o Develop strategy for information flow when assigned.
o Remain current on AP Style, UW editorial standards, SEO, data reporting and analysis as well as emerging technologies as needed for role.
o Bachelor’s degree in English, communication, journalism or related field and 3 years of experience in an editorial role.
o Proficiency using Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro.
o Hands-on experience using HTML and content management systems.
o Experience working within a brand voice and developing content strategy.
o Experience using AP Style and an internal style guide.
o Advanced degree or specialized education related to field.
o Familiarity with higher education marketing and content marketing.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as license/certification/registration.
