This unpaid internship provides a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to the student’s field of study or career interest. It will provide an opportunity for career exploration and development as well as a chance to learn new skills.ResponsibilitiesLearning Objectives Students will work with the Governance Studies communications team and have an opportunity to learn a variety of communication skills such as media relations, social media communication, paper editing, blogging, web publishing, and layout and dissemination of publications and scholarly work. Interns will assist with a variety of tasks including, but not limited to: researching and identifying relevant media targets and updating media lists to reflect editorial staff and beat changes; staffing public events and assisting with live tweeting of events when appropriate; helping to draft social media language and content, especially for Twitter; monitoring print and broadcast media for coverage that includes mention of projects and experts; supporting work to promote Governance Studies research, experts, events, and news; assisting with media relations outreach activities, as appropriate; assisting with layout and design of research papers, as appropriate; drafting blog posts. Interns will have the opportunity to attend internal meetings, local think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events, as well as participate on Brookings sports teams and network with other interns throughout the Institution. QualificationsEducation/Knowledge/Skills Undergraduate students working toward a degree in public policy, political science, English, communications, journalism, and/or media relations, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Our most successful interns have strong writing, social media, analytical, and multi-tasking skills. Experience with web publishing on Wordpress, graphic design programs such as Photoshop or Canva, and knowledge of media databases like Cision is preferred. Experience with copy editing is a plus. Additional Information Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings. Brookings requires that all applicants submit a cover letter and resume.
