Development Associate and Membership Coordinator

Job Description:

American Friends of the Israel Museum (AFIM) seeks an organized and resourceful associate to support all development efforts. The successful candidate will work directly with the Executive Director and Director of Development and play a key role in planning, coordinating, and implementing all aspects of AFIM’s fundraising activities.

AFIMis a non-profit organization in the United States that works with the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, to raise funds and acquire art, either through purchase (with raised funds) or as gifts (from living donors or by bequests), in the United States. The Museum’s holdings are encyclopedic, covering pre-historic to contemporary art. AFIM runs a full program of events throughout the year for various groups of supporters, as well as two major fund raising events in New York (a Spring Luncheon and a Fall Gala Dinner) one in Palm Beach each January and one in Los Angeles each February. AFIM has a staff of 6 in New York and 1 in Los Angeles.

Reporting to the Executive Director and the Director of Development, the primary areas of responsibility are:


Serve as initial point person for membership inquiries and retention:

· Field calls and emails regarding general membership questions, and respond or direct to the appropriate person

· Assist with Identifying and engaging new members

· Assist with developing and implementing annual calendar of programming for various membership groups including but not limited to Patrons, Contemporary Art Acquisitions Committee, and Associates

· Follow up on membership renewals

2) Coordinate and Manage Local and National Events for various support groups:

Research venues, coordinate details with the committees

Organize personalized invitation mailings

Keep track of RSVPs and overall events calendar

Make follow up phone calls to urge attendance and/or monetary participation

Attend events, facilitate guest check in, and other details as required

3) Work with Senior Staff on:

Writing Press releases and grant request letters

Research Foundations, corporations and individuals for targeted solicitations

General Correspondence, billing and collecting on special pledges

Follow up on meetings of the Board, Executive and all standing committees

Experience and Skills:

Minimum of three years event planning experience

One year art world experience preferred

Excellent organizational, writing and communications skills

Attention to detail essential

Ability to work well under pressure on a variety of projects

Due to significant donor contact, ability to work well with others and with top level donors is essential


Occasional evening and weekend work required

Small, midtown Manhattan office

Salary commensurate with experience
