maaps Board of Directors, who are elected by the membership, is conducting a search to find its next Executive Director. We are looking for a candidate with strong leadership and association management skills. Experience with Massachusetts special education and human services preferred.

The Executive Director is responsible for the maaps

staff which is comprised of 5 professionals who are engaged in a variety of activities including advocacy, government affairs, policy development, professional development, committee management, event/conference planning, and operation.

The Executive Director reports to the maaps

Board of Directors and works closely with the board’s Executive Committee. The Executive Director will be well versed in governance and board management.

The Executive Director maintains good communication, keeping the membership apprised of issues and trends that impact the association. As an advocate for membership, he/she interfaces with state legislators on an ongoing basis, and protects the interests of members within the legislative process whenever necessary. He/she actively assists the board by presenting the various dimensions of issues so that board decisions are fully informed.

The Executive Director is responsible for managing public relations and other external relationships. He/she possesses attributes that will make them effective in establishing and maintaining relationships with various maaps


Assure organization’s strategic direction remains true to mission, and that performance is measured according to predetermined indicators

Oversight and supervision of staff

Management of overall operation through sound fiscal practices

Compliance with all applicable state and federal regulation

Inform and advise Board of Directors with regard to industry trends and/or challenges and changes in government policy

Work with Board of Directors to maximize benefits and value to membership

Maintain positive relations with all stakeholders

Work with leaders at all levels of government to assure the interest of members are well represented and protected


10 years leadership experience in association management preferred

Proven skills in government affairs

Demonstrated skills in managing a complex organization in a highly regulated industry

Thorough understanding of education/human service sectors

Proven skills with financial management

Excellent communication skills

Experience in public relations/media interactions

Ability to collaborate with and involve Board of Directors in organizational strategy and operation

Masters degree in related field

Valid drivers license
