Job Summary

The Islamic Studies Program (ISP) serves students, faculty, and the extramural community by promoting the understanding of global Islamic culture and Muslim societies worldwide, through pioneering research, innovative instruction, and a commitment to building partnerships on campus and beyond. Starting in summer 2018 the Program will becomeGlobal Islamic Studies Center (GISC).

Responsibilities

Programming.

Develop, promote, plan, and manage other staff to implement Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC) disciplinary, cross-disciplinary, and cross-regional programs and manage project budgets. Communicate with other units at U-M and U-M Dearborn to aggregate information on Islamic Studies programs and events. Work with GISC director and others, organize lectures, conferences, symposia, and films, and oversee staff providing logistical and technical support (e.g., room scheduling, media equipment, A-V recording, etc.). Provide visitor services (travel, visa, honoraria, per diem payments, hosting arrangements, itineraries). Develop and review project budgets and initiate and track financial transactions for GISC programs. Coordinate GISC faculty committees and communications with faculty. Organize and participate in staff meetings and cross-center planning.

Communications and Marketing:

Prepare and edit copy for reports, publications, websites, and other publicity for GISC activities. Develop and oversee maintenance of specialized GISC e-mail groups. Advertise events and academic programs through e-mail communication, print publications, and social media.

Student Outreach:

Assist graduate student groups to secure funding and to plan lectures and workshops. Liaise with II Student Services to coordinate both graduate and undergraduate curriculum and degree programs. Oversee undergraduate curricular program and GISC student funding opportunities in partnership with II Undergraduate Academic Services and Fellowships and Graduate Academic Services. Develop and administer internship opportunities for U-M students in Islamic studies with domestic and international partners. Coordinate GISC faculty committees and communicate with faculty.

Grant Management

: Administer future GISC grant opportunities. Coordinate data collection and analysis, and prepare draft budgets, narratives, and reports.

Development:

Work with the GISC director and LSA Advancement to explore potential gift opportunities. Manage alumni relations, correspondence, and alumni database updates. Prepare alumni and other funding requests; plan development events as needed.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies or related field, or experience and training in Islamic studies; excellent communication and English language skills; ability to handle a variety of tasks and meet deadlines; ability to work occasional evenings and weekends; knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google, and Adobe.

Desired Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Islamic studies or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; one year University of Michigan experience; familiarity with University policies, rules, and administrative procedures; proficiency in at least one Islamicate language.
