Media Relations Rep - Science Writer Senior','0176852','!*!Job Purpose: Lead strategic communications/PR efforts for College of

Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Architecture, Business, Ivan Allen College,

international campuses and other campus centers including message development,

media visibility, media training and conceiving, planning, organizing and

executing PR activities. These activities include, but not limited to, public

meetings, grand openings, rollout events and other relationship building and

brand promotion activities. Monitor media inquiries, remain on call 24/7, and

serve as a member of the crisis communications team for the Institute,

providing backup to the Institute spokesperson, Media Director and Institute

Vice President as necessary.

 

Major Responsibilities:

Prepare

news releases, talking points, op eds, media pitches and other written

materials.Administer

public relations needs for assigned beats; compile daily news summary.Develop

and execute PR plans for specific units or events.Provide

content for Institute Web site; maintain experts guide.Secure

video, photography and other multimedia to support news release or pitch;

conceive, manage and promote signature programs that position Georgia Tech

as a thought leader.Provide

media training.Perform

other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s

degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or

related field or equivalent combination of education and experienceWork

Experience: Five years job related experienceCertifications: N/ASkills: Strong

organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communications skills

and attention to detail; computer knowledge: search for data, input/edit

information, word processing; software knowledge: Macintosh/Windows,

Excel, Photoshop, MS Word, PowerPoint, Mercury/Drupal content management

systems, and Meltwater

Work Experience: Five or more years job related

experience. Identifying, interviewing sources, writing and editing

magazine articles, news releases and other materials to support the

research and economic development news portfolio. Support editorial

and related needs of Research Horizons magazine and website including but

not limited to: collaborating with unit communicators on website content;

editing news releases and other materials for use; securing photography;

assisting in reviewing layouts and proofreading the magazine (hard copy

and digital); overseeing; evaluating other uses for magazine content and

supporting efforts to update mailing list updates and distribute magazine

to off-campus and on-campus sources. Manage evaluation of magazine,

website and e-newsletter through periodic surveys of researchers, subscribers

and other means. Collect content for e-newsletter and supervise

production. Track news media writers and editors who cover research

topics and monitor news coverage. Share clips with media relations reps

for them to share with researchers. Develop expert abstracts based on

selected news releases for online expert guide. Monitor news and

related research and economic development websites for content that needs

updating. Preferred

Skills: Skills in use of project

management and page layout software and AP or Chicago Manual of Style is

preferred. Skills in interviewing faculty and familiarity with web and

print publishing processes will be helpful. Strong organizational skills,

excellent verbal and written communications skills and attention to

detail; computer knowledge: ability to search for information, input/edit

information, word processing; software knowledge: Macintosh/Windows,

Excel, Photoshop, MS Word, database software, PowerPoint, Drupal content

management systems, and media tracking.

Additional Information: This position will support Georgia Tech’s research and economic

development communications program, which communicates the results of research

to specific audiences and demonstrates how Georgia Tech’s innovation ecosystem

benefits the state, region and nation.

staff, students, external audiences including media. This position will
