With the economy in a shaky place, and with more and more people concerned about what their job situation might be in the coming months, you'll find that you may be wondering whether you want to take the plunge into the public relations field. The truth of the matter is that even though there are a lot of industries that feel fairly perilous and unsteady, PR is undergoing its own kind of renaissance and life. One of the major parts of being a PR officer or employee is that you do have to be positive, but the truth of the matter is that there is actually quite a lot to be positive about. If this is a field that you are interested in, there are lots of things to consider.

The first thing that you should think about is that the PR field has recovered from its own issues not so very long ago. Though the PR field is currently in full swing right now doesn’t mean that it was in the past. For example, after the 9/11 attacks in the early 2000s, there was a sharp decrease in the services that were being retained. There were some real problems at the time, and the positive outlook that was offered by PR firms and representatives wasn’t something that people were willing to buy into. The good news, though, is that those times are over and people need and want the services of good public relations people even more.

For instance, take a look at the fact that the proportion of companies who are planning to increase spending in public relations has more than doubled in recent times. The increase of PR staff is very much a part of that, and if you are looking to get involved in a field just as it is getting ready to boom, you should take a look at public relations. If you want to see how good the field is looking, just take a look at the fact that PR departments and agencies are moving forward at record speeds to secure candidates that look promising. Just since 2005, the number of interns that the agencies are bringing in has doubled.

If you are thinking about getting a job in the public relations field, though, remember that you are going to be up against some stiff competition. There are a lot of bright people who are coming, and though they do promise some fascinating changes and challenges for the industry, they are also going to be the people that you are competing against! Make sure that you know what you want and that you are ready to fight to get it.

There are so many venues for your talents when you are looking at public relations. You might be called upon to improve the image of a politician or to work with media or with grassroots organizations to improve their communication. This is an amazing time to get started in this industry, and the more time that you spend working on your plan, the better off you are going to be. This is something that can make a huge difference so see where PR can take you!
