As a PR professional in the US, you should consider looking for jobs in DC. DC has consistently been ranked as the best place in the US for job seekers. In fact, many of the people working in DC today came from other states and cities. Some people have crossed several states to look for jobs in DC. With many areas of the US reeling from the high rate of unemployment that has been occasioned by the economic recession plaguing the country, jobs in DC have been the least affected. Unemployment has remained as low as 6%.

It is a thriving market mainly for government jobs. But there is a good reason why the DC job market seems to come out well despite any crisis thrown at it. Most states that have seen a drastic decline in job opportunities were affected because of their heavy reliance on construction, manufacturing and financial services jobs.

These are the industries that were hit the most with job loss hitting double-digit percentages. However, DC's primary source of jobs is the federal government which is a much more stable employer than private enterprise during the hard times. In addition, the number of federal government jobs has continued to grow thanks to the creation of new agencies and departments of government.

For instance, in the 1990's, jobs in DC did not include homeland security positions. Following its creation and the real threat that global terrorism poses to America, homeland security has now become the fastest growing sector. This is not only through jobs created within the department; the homeland security department issues contracts worth about $7 billion per year to companies in DC.

This in turn creates work in these companies thus providing a steady supply of DC jobs. Something else that works to DC's advantage is an incentive package passed by Congress recently that aims to support small and budding industries even in the award of government contracts.

DC work is not only in the form of full time jobs. Interns in DC play an important role too. Interns working in DC are either not paid or are given a small stipend to cater for part of their expenses. The significant number of intern positions in DC is not in doubt. However, accurate statistics on just how many interns there are in DC or how many intern jobs there are is not available from any single source. This is because since the interns do not receive any pay it is difficult to track the number in each organization.

Even though finding DC jobs is relatively easier than finding work in other states or cities, nothing is assured. DC has not been completely spared from the effects of an ever more competitive US and global market. If you live in another part of the country and are keen on working in DC, you should bear in mind that not many companies are willing to pick up relocation expenses.

In fact, many recruiters do not even settle payments for accommodation or plane tickets for people who have travelled all the way just to interview for DC work. You therefore have to be ready to foot your own costs if you travel for an interview to DC.

If you are already working elsewhere in the country, you might need to wish for and take advantage of a conference or business trip that has been paid for by your current employer and that is taking place in or close to DC. Get permission from your employer to extend the days you stay in DC but at your own cost. You can use this time to meet the managers who are involved in the hiring process in the companies that best impress you. This of course means that you need to have carried out the necessary due diligence.
