Job Description:

Where you fit in

Hydrogen is in the middle of our energy transition journey and will play a pivotal role to achieve a net-zero emissions energy system by 2050. It will be increasingly important in decarbonizing the energy system, and as one of the major new business models for Shell.

Shell needs to be a first mover in order to make and shape the market for clean hydrogen that ultimately creates value for Shell. This approach will allow cementing the right partnerships early, capturing a disproportionate portion of subsidies to reach economies of scale and avoiding lock out of an emerging industry where economies of scale will create a significant barrier to entry.

The Integrated Hydrogen Projects team focuses on developing and building production capacity for clean / fully renewable hydrogen with electrolysers and blue hydrogen plants. The team is working on a portfolio of projects in the core markets in various phases of maturity. The early projects will set the course for a competitive portfolio that will have competitive unit cost and rapid development cycles through standardization and replication.

Germany is showing a particularly positive environment for evolving hydrogen technology with significant political support driving the energy transition and decarbonization of society with hydrogen being seen as one pillar of this roadmap. Rheinland (as well as Hamburg) are well situated locations with lighthouse electrolyser projects being developed at this stage. Refinery/chemicals as well as fuels market offer favorable outlets with strongly supportive regulatory and political support. Significant retail networks for light duty (H2Mobility) and heavy duty (H2Accelerate) already exist and plan further extension.

The first large scale electrolyser built by Shell (REFHYNE, 10MW) was recently inaugurated. With REFHYNE 2 Shell was now successful as part of a wider consortium to acquire EUR 30mln of grant funding from the EU Horizon 2020 program in order to further develop and scale this technology and deploy Europe’s biggest PEM Electrolyser by 2024.

What’s the role?

The newly established Grant Manager will be pillar in managing the interface with the European Commission and responsible for ensuring fully compliant and audit safe execution and extraction of value from the EU Horizon 2020 (and potential subsequent) grant(s). This requires detailed understanding of the rules and regulation evolving from the grant agreement with the EU as well as implementation of the full end-to-end integration of the grant process into Shell’s Requisition-to-Pay process. The role is comprising a broad range of stakeholders and activities including liaison to the consortium and grant coordinator, CP activities, internal process alignment as well as booking / accounting in our GSAP system and auditing.

Key accountabilities include:

Hands-on, practical execution of the EU Horizon 2020 grant for REFHYNE 2 in cooperation of a wider grant consortium and external grant coordinator (R&D institute) incl. tracking and monitoring of all grant obligations
Development and assurance of a compliant and audit-trail safe execution processes integrated into Shell’s existing Requisition-to-Pay (RtP) in order to ensure the above execution and spending of the grant fundings
Alignment and close cooperation with multiple internal and external functions and stakeholders in order to enable smooth and frictionless implementation of the project REFHYNE 2
Diligent documentation and audit-trail safe archiving of all grant and audit relevant information

What we need from you

University level qualification: Finance, Accounting, Economics or other relevant degree
Experience in relevant functions such as Contracting & Procurement or Finance/Accounting
Experience in public funding / grant environment or cooperation with public authorities, particularly European Commission / EU agencies is highly welcome
Proven track-record in a structured, process-driven work environment requiring high level of reliability and due diligence
