About The Office of Legislative Services
The Office of Legislative Services (OLS) is an agency of the New Jersey Legislature established by law to provide professional, nonpartisan staff support services to the Legislature including its officers, members, committees and commissions. OLS operates under the authority of the Legislative Services Commission, a 16-member bipartisan panel with equal representation from each House of the Legislature.
The goal of OLS is to facilitate the work of the New Jersey Legislature and to enable and promote public understanding of the legislative process. As nonpartisan employees of the Legislature, OLS staff are prohibited from engaging in political activity or taking a public position with regard to any matter before the Legislature.
General Description
Position includes responsibility for recording and transcribing testimony from public hearings, committee and commission meetings, Senate and Assembly sessions and other proceedings as required by law or requested by members of the Legislature. Position requires travel throughout the State.
The Hearing Reporter sets up and breaks apart recording equipment and microphones used to record testimony, including transporting the recording equipment and microphones, taping wires to the floor, detecting issues and adjusting sound levels, judging the equipment's sound clarity and pick-up during hearings, and informing the Coordinator if maintenance or new equipment is needed.
Requirements
Education:
High school diploma.
Preferred Education:
Associate degree from an accredited college or university in liberal arts, education, secretarial science or related field.

Microsoft Office Specialist Certification
(or)
Electronic Transcriber Certification from AAERT (American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers).
Experience:
One year of experience transcribing the spoken word, including one year of experience using Microsoft Office.
Preferred Experience:
Two years of experience electronically recording and transcribing the spoken word, including two years of experience using Microsoft Office; or one year of experience in journalism or copywriting.
Additional Requirements
Ability to safely set up and break down equipment including transporting equipment and taping wires to the floor, under tables, behind furniture, etc. is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Ability to move items weighing up to 15 pounds in a safe and effective manner is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Residency Law: Pursuant to the New Jersey First Act, all persons newly hired by the Office of Legislative Services, unless exempted by the law, shall have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. New Jersey state employees hired prior to September 1, 2011 who transfer from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than seven days but who reside outside the State of New Jersey are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the Act.
